Todd & Carley Abell
Owners
Abell Funeral Homes and Flower shop are family owned and operated facilities. Todd and Carley Abell moved their family to Abernathy to purchase the funeral home in 1991. In 1997, they purchased Freeman Funeral Home in Hale Center. Carley's interest in the floral business led her to open Abell Flower Shop in May of 2001.

Todd Abell graduated from Ralls High School, Ralls, Texas, in 1981 and Dallas Institute of Funeral Service, with honors in February of 1986. Carley is a 1981 graduate of Perryton High School, Perryton, Texas. They have two sons; Keelan and Cory, one daughter, Teyler; two grandsons, Braeden and Corbin and one granddaughter, Keelee.

The Abell's are active in community affairs. Both, Todd and Carley, are members of the Abernathy Lions Club, where Todd served as past-president and Carley served as their first female President. Todd served on the Abernathy City Council and has been active in the Chamber of Commerce and the Abernathy Industrial Board. Carley has been active in Boy Scouts, serving as a Den Leader and Cub Master, and Abernathy ISD committees. Carley is past president of the South Plains Professional Floral Association.

Todd has also shown his committment to funeral service by serving as the president for the Panhandle Funeral Directors Association and by serving on the Board of the Texas Funeral Directors Association.
Elaine Barrett
Funeral Director / Office Manager
Elaine Barrett, a lifelong Hale Center resident, was raised in the funeral business. Her parents, Bill and Arleen Freeman, were the previous owners of Abell Funeral Home in Hale Center.

Elaine is secretary of the First United Methodist Church, Hale Center, as well as her work with both funeral homes. She is a volunteer for Meals-On-Wheels. She has served as past-president of the Hale Center Chamber of Commerce and the Hale Center Owl Booster Club. For years, Elaine was a leader in the 4-H Club. Elaine received her Funeral Directors License from the State of Texas in 2006.

Elaine and Darryl Barrett have two children; Amy and Casey, and three granddaughters.
Jerry & Claudia Oswalt
Part-time Funeral Assistant & Office Assistant
Jerry and his wife Claudia were lifelong Abernathy residents until moving to Lubbock in 2005. They have three children, Debby, Jeff, and Lori, and eight grandchildren.

Jerry's main occupation was farming and he primarily raised cotton.

Jerry and Claudia have shown their dedication to the Abernathy community and surrounding area in various ways. He has previously served as an Abernathy School Trustee, Director of the Abernathy Ex-Students Association, and they have both served as members of community choirs. They have been involved with the youth by supporting the area FFA and 4H Chapters.

Jerry has been very involved in agriculture by serving on various boards. He served as chairman of the board of the Panhandle-Plains Federal Land Bank Association and had been a director on that board from 1977 until 2004. He served on several committees of the Tenth District Farm Credit Bank which represents Texas, New Mexico, Louisiana, Mississippi and Alabama. Jerry was also a Director of the National Coalition of Agriculture Producers.

He has served on the combined board of the Children's Home of Lubbock and Texas Boys Ranch, which is located near Lubbock, Texas.
 Dave Menefee
Part-time Funeral assistant
Dave Menefee has been employed for Abell Funeral Homes and Flower Shop since 2006. He currently lives in Lubbock, and was pastor of the First Church of the Nazarene in Abernathy for several years prior to that. Dave is married to his wife Ronda and they have 2 daughters and 3 grandchildren.
 Steve Gauntt
Part-time Funeral Assistant
Steve Gauntt and his wife Angie have been residents of Abernathy for several years. Steve is the minister at the Abernathy Church of Christ, as well as, a part-time employee of Abell Funeral Home. Steve and Angie have 4 children, Lori, Ashley, Luke and Austin.
