Dorothy Houwen, age 83, of Sibley, Iowa, passed away on Wednesday, December 12, 2007, at the Sibley Nursing and Rehab.

Funeral services will be Thursday, December 20, 2007, at 10:30 A.M. at the First Presbyterian Church in Sibley. Rev. Terry Simm officiating.

Burial in the Gilman Township Cemetery in Ashton.

Visitation will be Wednesday, December 19, from 2:00 to 8:00 P.M. with the family present from 6:00 to 8:00 P.M. at the Andringa Funeral Home in Sibley.

Dorothy Marie Johnson was born on November 24, 1924, in Dakota City, Nebraska, the daughter of Harry and Helen (Sundt) Johnson. Her family lived on a farm north of Jackson, NE, until 1931 when they moved to South Sioux City, NE. In 1937, the family moved to Sibley, IA. Dorothy graduated from Sibley High School in 1942.
Dorothy was united in marriage to Henry Houwen, in Sibley, IA on August 29, 1943. Henry farmed and lived on various farms in Osceola Co. Dorothy’s father was a self-taught beekeeper and also taught Dorothy about beekeeping, a business that she pursued for over 50 years. Dorothy was also known as the Popcorn Lady, operating a popcorn stand in Sibley for many years. She also worked at the AMPI in Sibley, and was a Tupperware dealer for several years. For over twenty years, Dorothy worked part-time in the Osceola Co. Assessor’s Office as a township tax assessor. She also worked in the sales room at Nystroms’ Apple Orchard. Dorothy was known for her collection of antiques inside the house and the antique machinery outside on their acreage. She developed and interest in genealogy, and completed many volumes of information of each branch of the family. Dorothy enjoyed painting, sewing and gardening as hobbies.
She was a member of the First Presbyterian Church for over fifty years, and was a Sunday School teacher for over twenty-five years.
Dorothy has resided in the Sibley Nursing and Rehab for the past five years, where she passed away on Wed., Dec. 12, at the age of 83.
Dorothy is survived by one son, Harry Houwen and his wife, Elaine, of Petersburg, VA; two daughters, Mary Klinkenborg of Rock Rapids, IA and Nancy Bosma and her husband, Vern of Harris, IA, one son-in-law, Gary Vander Pol and his wife, Mary, of Sibley, IA; eleven grandchildren, ten great-grandchildren, and one great-great-grandchild; one sister, Ruth (Cliff) Willemssen, Sibley, IA, and one brother, Dave (Nellie) Johnson, Worthington, MN.
Dorothy was preceded in death by her husband; one daughter, Cindy Vander Pol; one son-in-law, Myron Klinkenborg; one granddaughter, Melanie Klinkenborg; one brother, Don Johnson and his wife, Leona Johnson.
