Gary D. Graves, age 65, of Sheldon, Iowa, passed away on Friday, June 6, 2008, at his home in Sheldon, Iowa.

Funeral services will be Wednesday, June 11, 2008, at 10:30 A.M. at the United Methodist Church in Sheldon. Rev. Jeremy Wiersema officiating.

Burial in the East Lawn Cemetery in Sheldon.

Visitation will be Tuesday, June 10, 2008, from 1:00 to 8:00 P.M. with the family present from 6:30 to 8:00 P.M. at the Andringa Funeral Home Sheldon Funeral Service in Sheldon.


Gary D. Graves was born on November 30, 1942, at home in rural Melvin, Iowa. He was the son of John H. J. and Della Fern (Dagel) Graves. He lived his youth in the Melvin and Sibley, Iowa, area, where he attended school. He enlisted into the Marine Corps, where he served for four years and was honorably discharged.
He was united in marriage to Sandy Lillie of LeMars, Iowa, on July 17, 1965, in LeMars. They lived in Gilmore City, Iowa, where Gary worked for Halletts Construction for two years and then they moved to Pocahontas, Iowa, where Gary worked for a hydraulic manufacturing company. They later moved to Sheldon, Iowa, where Gary was employed by the State of Iowa, Department of Transportation, where he worked for 29 years, until he retired. He bartended at the Fin and Feather Restaurant, drove truck for Granstra Trucking, and worked the concession stand at the baseball diamond.
Gary enjoyed gardening and was the president of the Garden Club in Sheldon. He also was a very strong Democrat and was involved in the local Democratic Party. He was a member of the American Legion in Sheldon.
He enjoyed traveling to Arizona and to Chicago, to visit his children.
Gary passed away on Friday, June 6, 2008, at his home in Sheldon.
Those left to cherish his memories are his wife: Sandy Graves of Sheldon, IA; his children: Holly Hill of Phoenix, AZ, and her two children: Crystal and James; Troy Graves of Chicago, IL; John and Trish Graves of Valparaiso, IN; two brothers: Russel and Carol Graves of Breckenridge, MN, Jess and Joyce Graves of Dubuque, IA; many nieces and nephews; extended family; two grand puppies; and many friends.
He was preceded in death by his parents; one brother: Richard; one infant brother: Virgil; parents-in-law: Richard Lillie and Leota Peterson and stepfather: George Peterson.
