Sadie Emelia Reisser Bruns was born on October 2, 1919 on a farm just north of Allendorf, Iowa. She was the forth child and third daughter of Alfred Charles Reisser and Marie Louise Storm Reisser.
At 11 months of age her father passed away from the Spanish influenza which took so many lives at that time; September 1920. Her pregnant mother and three small daughters then moved to Sanborn, Iowa to live near her mother, Bertha (Mrs. Ferdinand) Storm. Earlier her small brother, Phillip died of mastoid.
She attended Sanborn schools from kindergarten until her high school graduation in May, 1938, being an avid reader and honor student. In September, 1938, she entered the Methodist Hospital School of Nursing in Sioux City where she remained until her marriage.
On August 28, 1940 she was married to Louis Bruns of George, Iowa in the Methodist Church in Sanborn, Iowa. Following their marriage they lived at Solon, Harris, and Sutherland where Louis taught instrumental music in the school systems. They also lived on a farm northwest of George for 11 years before teaching at Sutherland. After Sutherland they lived in Hartley for two years.
They moved to Sheldon in February, 1958. In February, 1960 Louis became associated with Northwestern Mutual Life Insurance and became district agent for Plymouth, O’Brien and Lyon counties. Louis was killed and Sadie seriously injured in a car accident on November, 26, 1963.
Following her long recovery from her injuries in the accident and now a widow, Sadie took on the responsibility of raising her three younger sons. As time and circumstances progressed she was asked to work at the Sheldon Hospital as an assistant to the physical therapist. She worked with four therapists over the next 10 years until 1981 when she retired and moved to Sibley to live near her daughter Diane.
In December, 2000 she became a resident at Heartwood Heights Assisted Living and in 2006 she moved into the Country View Manor where she brought joy to many of the residents and staff with her caring spirit.
Louis and Sadie were the parents of five children, Dr. David (Joyce) Bruns of Lafayette, Indiana; Diane (Harold) Feldkamp of Sibley, Iowa; Dennis (Susan) Bruns of Eden Prairie, Minnesota; Don (Pam) Bruns of Granby, Colorado; and Rev. Dean (Dr. Cristy) Bruns of San Juan Capistrano, California.
She is survived by 8 grandchildren, Paul Feldkamp, Dr. Mark Feldkamp, Kristin Feldkamp Negley, Mary Feldkamp Dagel, Ian Bruns, Anna Bruns, Jeffrey Bruns and Jay Bruns; and 11 great-grandchildren, Rochelle Feldkamp, Harrison Feldkamp, Emily Feldkamp, Hudson Feldkamp, Hadley Feldkamp, Ainsley Feldkamp, Hannah Dagel, James Dagel, Rachel Sadie Dagel, William Bruns, Andrew Bruns and Skylar Bruns. She is also survived by two step grandchildren, Sherry (Matt) Foster and Cassy (Mike) Cremer, nine step great-grandchildren, a brother Alfred (Edith) Reisser, and brother-in-law Carl (Mildred) Bruns.
She was preceded in death by her husband Louis in 1963, her parents, her brother Phillip, two sisters Lila Barker Snuttjer and Verna Reisser.
Sadie was “born again” on July 26, 1945 at a tent meeting at George, Iowa. Dr. Oliver Green was the evangelist along with Phil and Louis Polermo, the musicians. She went forward when the invitation was given and was led to the Lord by Pastor Harm Johnson. Sadie was baptized by immersion on November 4, 1945 at the Tabernacle Baptist Church as a “believer in Christ because He died on the cross for my sins. In the old Tabernacle in the early 1940’s there were Scripture verses hanging on the walls. I was always convicted by the one, I John 5:12, He that hath the Son of God hath life; and he that hath not the Son of God hath not life.”
Sadie helped with the Awana Clubs both at Calvary Baptist Church in Sheldon and at the First Baptist Church in Sibley. She was a member of the Esther Circle and coordinator of the prayer chain for several years.
Sadie wrote, “My priorities in life have been raising my children in the fear and admonition of the Lord. They were very important to me and I lived for them. I pray that ‘the roll will be complete’ and they, my children and grandchildren and their spouses may have Jesus Christ as their personal Saviour and ‘commit’ their lives to Him. Many things about tomorrow I can’t seem to understand, but I know Who holds my future, and I know He will hold my hand.”
Sadie had many struggles in life, but with God’s help she finished strong.
