Gertrude Stephens, age 73, of Sibley, Iowa, passed away on Thursday, September 3, 2009, at the Osceola Community Hospital in Sibley, Iowa.

Memorial services will be Friday, September 11, 2009, at 1:30 P.M. at the First Presbyterian Church in Sibley. Rev. Terry Simm officiating.

Burial in the Holman Township Cemetery in Sibley.

There will be no visitation.


Gertrude Grace Stephens was born on August 11, 1936, in Sibley, Iowa. She was the daughter of John and Nancy (Klaassen) Funk. She lived her youth in Sibley, where she attended school and graduated from high school. Gertrude graduated from Worthington Jr. College and attended Mankato State University.
She married George Stephens Sr. in 1954, in Mitchell, South Dakota.
Gertrude was a Teachers Aid at Ben Franklin School for 30 years. She also was the night Custodian at Ben Franklin School.
She was a member of the First Presbyterian Church in Sibley. She was a member of the Business and Professional Women of Iowa, where she had held the office of Vice President.
Gertrude enjoyed camping, antiquing, reading, speaking German, and telling stories of the past. When she was young she played the violin and clarinet.
She passed away on Thursday, September 3, 2009, at the Osceola Community Hospital in Sibley.
Those left to cherish her memories are her son: George J. Stephens Jr. of Sioux Falls, South Dakota; and many relatives and friends.
She was preceded in death by her parents and one brother, Lammert Funk.
