Freda Vander Meulen, age 94, of Ocheyedan, Iowa, passed away on Thursday, September 10, 2009, at the Country View Manor in Sibley.

Funeral services will be Monday, September 14, 2009, at 10:30 A.M. at the Christian Reformed Church in Ocheyedan, Iowa. Rev. John Knoester officiating.

Burial in the Ocheyedan Township Cemetery in Ocheyedan.

Visitation will be Sunday from 1:00 to 6:00 P.M. with the family present from 2:00 to 4:00 P.M. at the Andringa Funeral Chapel in Ocheyedan.


Freda Vander Meulen was born on January 15, 1915, near Middleburg, Iowa. She was the daughter of John and Nellie (Faber) Iedema. When she was one year old, she moved with her family to a farm northwest of Ocheyedan, Iowa. She attended Horton Township Country School #8. In 1926, the family moved to the Sanborn, Iowa, area, and later to the Hartley, Iowa area. In 1935, they moved back to rural Ocheyedan.
She was united in marriage to Ray Vander Meulen of Ocheyedan, on February 27, 1939, at her parents’ home south of Ocheyedan. They lived in rural Ocheyedan, where they farmed. In 1975, they retired. Ray passed away on September 22, 1991.
Freda was an active member of the Christian Reformed Church in Ocheyedan, where she taught Sunday School and Calvinettes. She enjoyed working with Trash for Cash for the Christian School.
Freda’s family was very important to her.
She passed away on Thursday, September 10, 2009, at the Country View Manor in Sibley.
Those left to cherish her memories are her son and daughter-in-law: Gerald and Joan Vander Meulen of Ocheyedan, IA; and their children: Sandra and husband Brian Vande Hoef of Harris, IA, and their children: Tania and husband Jon Vander Kooi, and their children: Logan and Kason, Troy and wife Sarah Vande Hoef, Tamra and husband Josh Huff, and Tessa Vande Hoef; Donna Hanson of Ocheyedan, IA, and her children: Scott Hanson, Wesley Hanson, and Savanna Hanson; Douglas and wife Laura Vander Meulen of Ocheyedan, IA, and their children: Jenna and husband Ryan Vander Veen, Daniel Vander Meulen, Rebeca Vander Meulen, and Jon Vander Meulen.
She was preceded in death by her husband Ray; her parents; two brothers: Bernard Iedema and Willie Iedema.
