Doris LaVerne Sledge Wofford, age 83, departed this life Saturday, October 11, 2009.
She was born July 21, 1926 in Morrilton and was the daughter of the late C. R. and Sarah Ann Jordan Sledge. LaVerne attended Central Ward Grammar School, and graduated from Morrilton High School in 1944. To further her business education she attended Capitol City Business College in Little Rock and then worked at M. J. Siesel and Company, Little Rock. LaVerne returned to her hometown of Morrilton and was in clerical employ at Oberman and Company, until the plant closed, then became a bank teller at The First State Bank.
LaVerne married Bobby O. Wofford October 6, 1952, and was the mother of two sons, Bobby Charles and Rickey Don. Bob and LaVerne continued the operation of Wofford’s Grocery, from his parents; and then opened Wofford’s Cafeteria in downtown Morrilton. After her sons graduated high school, she worked at Sears until her retirement.
LaVerne was a charter member of Calvary Baptist Church. She taught Sunday School classes in the Youth Department during the early years of the church, and was a member of the choir.
Survivors are her son and daughter-in-law Bobby Charles and Glenna Wofford of Morrilton; her grandchildren Scott and wife Lindsay Wofford, Clayton Wofford all of Morrilton, and Keith and wife Amber Wofford of Conway; her greatgrandsons Ethan Roberts-Wofford, Logan Wofford and Kellen Wofford and daughter-in-law Theresa Paladino-Wofford of Morrilton.
Mrs. Wofford was preceded in death by her husband Bob and son Rick, and was the last survivor of the singing Sledge Sisters. LaVerne enjoyed listening to gospel music, family gatherings, and watching golf.
Funeral services are 10:00a.m. Tuesday, October 13, 2009 at Calvary Baptist Church in Morrilton by Brother Sonny Harvison. Burial at Elmwood Cemetery under the direction of Harris Funeral Home of Morrilton.
Pallbearers are grandsons Scott Wofford, Keith Wofford, Clayton Wofford, and nephews Billy Jack Roach, Bruce Tipton and Paul Glover.
