 | Laura Portillo Funeral Counselor There are many Hispanic families in our community, and it has been my calling to help our familes in their time of need. I'm a "people person" and my greatest joy in life is helping others. Some of our families take comfort in the fact that I can help them plan their final tribute for a loved one. Because I was born and raised in Cananea Sonora, Mexico I understand my country's culture, and traditions. My background has enabled me to arrange traditional funeral services for our familes. From choosing a Spanish speaking priest, arranging a Mariachi Band to play at the church and cemetery, planning food for a wake, all the way to the design of markers for our Valley Memorial Park Cemetery, and other local cemeteries in the valley. My concern for our familes doesn't stop after the funeral. I'm always in contact with family members during the planning, the service, and well after the funeral has ended. There have been many times when just a friendly call to see how a survivor is doing can brighten their day, and mine. This is why I feel honored to be a part of Simes Mortuaries.  | Val Rodriguez Assistant to the Funeral Director It's been almost ten years since I started working for Simes Mortuaries. I am responsible for the majority of our removals, transports outside of the city limits, assisting the Funeral Director’s with their responsibilities including working visitations and services. My family has lived in the area for many years and because of my involvement in churches, schools and public organizations, I try to continue my affiliations with them based on honesty and trust. My community involvement includes being a parishioner at St James Catholic Church in Coolidge, Arizona, The Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary Catholic Church in Florence, Arizona, and a close relationship with our Hospice facility. When I am in the Tucson area, I attend Santa Cruz Catholic Church. I pride myself in making friends and remembering people by names. I have been married 26 years with 2 daughters, 1 son, 3 foster sons, 3 foster daughters and a beautiful granddaughter. I have taken into my home and helped raise over 10 children with various ethnic backgrounds. | |
 | Susan Sumpter Office Manager I was born in Fresno, California, and raised in Indianapolis, Indiana. My husband Mike and I have been married 40 years. We have a son, and daughter, and 4 grandchildren. I've always enjoyed office work. I was office manager, 11 years at Krauter Storage Systems, assistant treasurer seven years for the corporate office of the Christian Church-Disciples of Christ, and sales associate, four years for THK America Linear Motion Company, all based out of Inianapolis. This May will mark my first year with Simes Mortuaries. I'm responsible for all the contracts, and goverment forms that must be completed in a timely manner. I also have assisted Mr. Simes and our funeral staff in scheduling arrangements with local churchs, cemeteries, and write many of the newspaper obituaries. I've always found my greatest reward was helping people. Although I've been here for only a year I feel that I'm part of a family, and our family is here to help your family in time of sorrow. | |
