On January 12, 1947, Shirley married Darrel Paul Lago, whom she met on a blind date. He was the love of her life. Darrel passed away in November, 2002. They lived on a farm east of Ocheyedan until 1969, at which time they bought a house in town where she resided until her death. She passed away on February 25, 2008 at the Avera Heart Hospital of Sioux Falls, South Dakota after a short illness, reaching the age of 81.
The joy of Shirley’s life was her family. She in survived by her son Paul and (Barbara) Lago and grandson Eric of Oxford, Mississippi; Rebecca and (Darold) Boersma of Hospers and their children Joshua, Joel and (Angela and their children Becca and Andrew) of Orange City, Iowa; Naomi and (Bright) Hachaba of Coon Rapids, Minnesota and Debra; Mark Lago of Lincoln, Nebraska; Maria Indalia and (Mario) Acuna and their children Ivann, Alexa and Natalia of Chicago, Illinois; Kimberly and (William) Schmidt and their children Brittany and (Tim) Gast, Bethany, Leah and Levi of Omaha, Nebraska; Marbella Vejar and daughter Amanda of Chicago, Illinois.

Darrel and Shirley were members of Central Avenue Baptist Church in Hartley, Iowa for many years. She was a woman of prayer, and the Lord was her greatest delight.
Shirley was a woman of diverse interests. As a young woman she built model airplanes, hunted with her father, and developed an interest in Egyptian archaeology. She enjoyed poetry and loved playing with first her own children and later, any child who needed time, attention and a listening ear. She could shop circles around her family and friends on any given day and find deals that she gladly gave away to anyone in need.
Shirley leaves to cherish her memory six children and their spouses, sixteen grandchildren, two great-grandchildren and a brother-in-law, Dwight Hayes of Chariton, Iowa.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Darrel, her parents and her sister, Audrey Hayes.
