| | | Garrett Post, age 86, of Sibley, Iowa, formerly of Ocheyedan, Iowa, passed away on Monday, June 30, 2008, at the Country View Manor in Sibley.
Funeral services will be Thursday, July 3, 2008, at 10:30 A.M. at the Christian Reformed Church in Ocheyedan. Rev. John Knoester officiating.
Burial in the Ocheyedan Township Cemetery in Ocheyedan.
Visitation will be Wednesday, July 2, from 2:00 to 8:00 P.M. with the family present from 6:30 to 8:00 P.M. at the Andringa Funeral Chapel in Ocheyedan.
Garrett Post was born February 8, 1922, in Ocheyedan, Iowa. He was the son of Henry and Tillie Post. He grew up in the Ocheyedan area and graduated from Ocheyedan High School. He attended Nettleton Business College in Sioux Falls, South Dakota. He worked in Sioux Falls until he was drafted into the U.S. Army in November, 1942, where he served in Okinawa and the Philippines. He was discharged in January, 1946, and worked as Osceola County Deputy Auditor for one year. He married Jeanette (Jean) Swaving in the Christian Reformed Church in Worthington, Minnesota, on July 10, 1947. He worked for 32 years at Ocheyedan Savings Bank, and the following 11 years he was employed by Chase Bag in Sibley. He and his wife Jean moved to Heartwood Heights in Sibley in 2002. He passed away on Monday, June 30, 2008, at Country View Manor in Sibley.
Garrett was a member of the Ocheyedan Christian Reformed Church where he served as elder, deacon, and on numerous committees. He was the treasurer for Classis Orange City (now Classis Heartland) for 40 years. He was a member of the school board at Ocheyedan Christian School, Western Christian High School (Hull, Iowa), and the voting board of Dordt College (Sioux Center, Iowa). Garrett’s love of people was also evident in his many areas of community involvement including his service as the town treasurer, the draft registrar, and as income tax preparer. He was an avid Twins fan, and he was the pitcher for various softball teams. He thoroughly enjoyed the many pet cats he had over the years. Garrett loved his family, and some of his favorite times were spent attending the activities of his children and grandchildren.
Those left to cherish his memory include his wife Jeanette (Jean), his children: Phyllis and Art Attema of Sioux Center, Iowa, Doug and Betty Post of Los Gatos, California, Judy and Dave Graanstra of Harris, Iowa, Donna and Lee Van Grouw of Rock Valley, Iowa, Kevin and Robin Post of Inwood, Iowa, 17 grandchildren, 10 great-grandchildren, his sister Lena Meurs of Fulton, Illinois, and his sisters-in-law Lucy Post of Northfield, Minnesota and Dorothy Post of Sibley, Iowa. He was preceded in death by his parents, his brothers, Andrew Post and John Post, his sisters, Cornelia Verhoef and Jennie Walburg and a sister in infancy.
