Sidney “Sid” Vander Griend, age 82, of Sheldon, Iowa, passed away on Sunday, December 28, 2008, at his home in rural Sheldon.

Funeral services will be Wednesday, December 31, 2008, at 1:30 P.M. at the First Christian Reformed Church in Sheldon. Rev. Greg Timmer officiating.

Burial in the East Lawn Cemetery in Sheldon, Iowa.

Visitation will be Tuesday, December 30, 2008, from 2:00 to 8:00 P.M. with the family present from 6:00 to 8:00 P.M. all at the First Christian Reformed Church in Sheldon, Iowa.


Sidney “Sid” Vander Griend was born on March 2, 1926, in New Holland, South Dakota. He was the son of Herman and Marie (Dykshoorn) Vander Griend. He lived for nine years in New Holland, South Dakota and nine years in Sioux Center, Iowa, before moving to his farm southwest of Sheldon. Sid served in the U. S. Army during World War II, from 1944 to 1946, with oversea duty in China. He received his G.E.D. from NITC in 1970, and was proud to be an honorary graduate, as a World War II Veteran, with the Sheldon High School graduating class of 2001.
He was united in marriage to Marie Alons of Sanborn, Iowa, on November 16, 1949 in Sheldon. They lived on their farm, southwest of Sheldon, for 60 years.
Sid was an active member of the First Christian Reformed Church in Sheldon.
He was a member of Kiwanis, the American Legion, and the Gideons. He was active in Agriculture Boards and Christian Education School Boards. He was the Treasurer at the Christian Retirement Home in Sheldon, from which he recently retired, after serving for 10 years. His life’s passion was serving others, especially through Love INC.
Sid will be remembered for his faith, his love of family, serving others, and farming.
He passed away on Sunday, December 28, 2008, at his home in rural Sheldon.
Those left to cherish his memories are his wife Marie; his children: Marla and Jeff Sverdlow of Bradenton, FL, Harlan and Diane Vander Griend of Sheldon, IA, David and Debra Vander Griend of Wichita, KS, Dennis and LeeAnn Vander Griend of Colwich, KS, Gene and Cindy Vander Griend of Sioux Falls, SD, Steve and Mari Vander Griend of Wichita, KS; 14 grandchildren; 9 great-grandchildren; 2 brothers: Art Vander Griend of Bradenton, FL, Howard and Marilyn Vander Griend of Sully, IA; and close friend and neighbor: Richard and Sandy Haack of Sheldon, IA.
He was preceded in death by his parents; 2 sisters: Marianne Balt and Jeanette Wynia; one brother: Marvin Vander Griend.
