| | | Nicholas W. “Nick” Bauerle, 89, of Columbus, formerly of North Vernon, died at 1:55 a.m. Monday, Aug. 20, 2007, at Hospice of South Central Indiana Inpatient Facility.
Mr. Bauerle was a U.S. Army Air Corps veteran, serving as an airplane and engine mechanic during World War II. After the war, he was an aircraft mechanic at Bakalar Air Base in Columbus then worked for General Motors in Indianapolis as an aircraft mechanic and retired from Allison Transmission in 1982.
He was a member of First Christian Church in North Vernon, Veterans of Foreign Wars in North Vernon and the American Legion in Seymour. He was a member of the Veterans Honor Guard in North Vernon, enjoyed dancing, playing cards and fishing.
The funeral will be conducted at 10 a.m. Thursday at Barkes, Weaver & Glick Funeral Home on Washington Street with the Rev. Gilbert Schreiber officiating. Calling will be from 5 to 8 p.m. Wednesday and from 9 a.m. until service time Thursday. Burial will be at Garland Brook Cemetery and military rites will be conducted by Bartholomew County Veterans Color Guard.

Born in North Vernon Feb. 7, 1918, Mr. Bauerle was the son of Henry N. and Mary E. Everhart Bauerle.
He is survived by a son, David (Bonnie) Bauerle of Columbus; a stepdaughter, Peggy (Bill) Walker of Jennings County; grandchildren, Stacey (Jeff) Kelsey, Dawn (Steve) Denney, David (Lisa) Bauerle II, Rick (Missy) and Tony (Sandy) Walker and Lisa (Jock) Reese; a sister, Anna Mae Giddings of North Vernon; 18 great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Mae Moberly Grimes Bauerle on Aug. 23, 1983; a stepson, George Grimes; three sisters; and one brother.
