Richard D. Barkes, 79, of Liberty Lane died at 1:45 a.m. S u n d ay, March 22, 2009, at Hospice of South Central Indiana Inpatient Facility.
M r. Barkes retired in 1987 from Hartup Tool & Die, where he was a tool & die maker for 37 years. He was a member of East Columbus United M e t h o d i s t Church and Camon Masonic Lodge.
He enjoyed fishing, hunting and bowling and loved his church, family and friends.
A private funeral and calling will be conducted at Barkes, Weaver & Glick Funeral Home on Washington Street with the Revs. Charles Aigner and Patrick Galligar officiating. A Masonic memorial service will be conducted by Camon Masonic Lodge. Burial will be at Garland Brook Cemetery.

Born March 28, 1929, in South Dakota, Mr. Barkes was the son of Lowell and Mildred Young Barkes. He married Betty A. Yeley on Nov. 19, 1949. She preceded him in death April 23, 1993. He married Bernice D. Butler on Oct. 24, 1998. She survives.
Also surviving are daughters, Marcia (Tom) Covert of Columbus and Nancy (Dean) Barnett of Greenwood; a stepdaughter, Terri Johnson of Columbus; brothers, Dennis (Florence) Barkes of Columbus and Marvin (Linda) Barkes of Greenwood; grandchildren, Cory (Julie) Carleton of Fishers, Toby Carleton of Greenwood and Mende (Chad) Warfield of Columbus; a stepgranddaughter, Amanda Johnson of Columbus; great-grandchildren, Tyler Carleton of Greenwood and Brayden and Braxton Warfield, both of Columbus; stepgreat-grandsons, Aaron and Nathaniel Johnson, both of Columbus; and several nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents; his first wife; a brother, Howard Barkes; a sister, Yvonne Barkes; and a granddaughter, Alli Rexroat.
