Dr. Jerome E. “Jerry” Herrberg, 63, of Columbus died at 3 a.m. Monday, April 20, 2009, at Hospice of South Central Indiana Inpatient Facility after his latest relapse in a 23-year struggle with lymphoma.
A memorial service will be conducted at 4 p.m. Saturday, May 2, 2009, at Barkes, Weaver & Glick Funeral Home on Washington Street with the Rev. Lane Loman officiating. Calling will be from 2 p.m. until service time Saturday.
Memorial contributions may be made to Nature Conservancy or Care Animal Rescue.

Dr. Herrberg was born January 24, 1946, in Huntington, Ind., to Berniece Anna Johnson Herrberg and Edward Anthony Herrberg.
He attended public schools in Huntington County and graduated from Huntington High School in 1964. He graduated from Indiana State University, with a B.S. in chemistry, in 1968 and earned his Doctor of Medicine from Indiana University in 1972.
He took membership in Indiana Academy of Family Physicians in 1975. Dr. Herrberg started his medical practice in Columbus in July 1974 and had been a member of the Columbus Regional Hospital medical staff since 1974.
He pursued a lifelong interest in science, especially space science, and was active in many sports, especially tennis, racquetball, golf and waterskiing.
Dr. Herrberg married Jean E. Kay on July 14, 1968. He is survived by sons, Sean (Nicole) Herrberg of Xenia, Ohio, and Jeremy (Libby) Herrberg of Bowling Green, Ind.; grandchildren, Emily Herrberg (10 years) and Rurik Herrberg (13 months); brothers, Steven (Linda) Herrberg of Fort Wayne and Dr. Jeffrey (Janet) Herrberg of Naples, Fla.; a twin sister, Bernita (Bill) Melvin of Columbus; and many nieces, nephews and cousins.
He was preceded in death by his parents.
His family wishes to convey its deep gratitude for the devotion and assistance given to Dr. Herrberg and then to us by his longtime loyal office staff; nurse, Valerie Rader; substitute nurse, Mae Hawkins; office manager, Patty Johnson; and Bev Hargitt, transcriptions.
Thanks also to his patients for rescheduling, sending cards and notes of encouragement and flowers. Your caring matters.
The family also wishes to thank the wise, compassionate counsel of Dr. Charles Hatcher and Dr. Robert Buell as well as the many other doctors, nurses and caregivers who helped Dr. Herrberg face and fight once again this killer cancer.
