  VIEW/SEND CONDOLENCES

Christa Meta (von Henke) von Buchler, born Feb. 21, 1921, passed away Aug. 22, 2010.

Christa was born in East Prussia, historically the part of Germany that is today the country of Lithuania. Her mother, Meta von Henke, died in childbirth and she was raised by her Aunt Clara and her father Gustav. By the time she finished her schooling, WWII was raging. She was drafted and worked as a telephone operator until the end of the war. Her first love, Kurt, was killed early in the war. In 1944 her father died en route as the family was fleeing the advancing Russian troops.

Christa met her husband, Helmut, during the later stages of WWII while he was home on leave from the Russian front. They married after the war was over in 1945 and resettled in the northern city of Schleswig in West Germany.

In order to provide a better future for their three children, Christa and Helmut made the difficult decision in 1955 to leave their homeland and emigrate to the United States. The family was sponsored by St. Peterís Lutheran Church and the Stadler family, both of Columbus. No one in the family spoke English. Christa and Helmut learned English by taking night classes and later became American citizens.

Helmut farmed for Stadler Farms, while Christa dedicated herself to making a home for him and their three children. She made butter, cottage cheese and German bread; the family grew all their own vegetables. Kindhearted and sacrificially loving to her family, Christa was a quiet, unassuming woman who was truly loyal to her family and those she knew.

Christa was a member of St. Peterís Lutheran Church and a Kaffee Kranzchen (coffee circle), a group of women from Germany who met regularly for decades.

In 2004 she moved from her home to assisted living at Four Seasons Retirement Center. Soon after, she took in a stray cat she named Mietzie. They were inseparable buddies. As her health deteriorated and she was faced with giving up Mietzie in order to move to the Health Center, she and her cat moved instead to Countryside Manor in Anderson, IN, in January, 2009. She moved back to Four Seasons on July 3, 2010.

Christa was preceded in death by her son Hartmut, in 1989, and her husband, Helmut, in 2003.

She is survived by her son, Wolfgang (Judy) von Buchler of Anderson; daughter, Ingrid (Tom) Meador of Indianapolis; four grandchildren: Nan Dehnke of Vincennes, Matthew von Buchler and Elizabeth von Buchler, both of Bloomington, and Justin (Holly) von Buchler of Indianapolis; two great-grandchildren, Ceili and Keaton von Buchler; a godchild, Heidi Hartman of San Francisco; and her beloved cat, Mietzie.

The funeral will be conducted at 10:30 a.m. Thursday at Barkes, Weaver & Glick Funeral Home on Jonathan Moore Pike with the Rev. Patrick Galligar officiating.

Family and friends may call from 5:30 to 8 p.m. Wednesday and from 9:30 a.m. until service time Thursday.

Burial will be at Daugherty Cemetery.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Madison County (IN) Humane Society, A Turning Point (women's shelter) of Columbus, or a charity of the donor's choosing.
