Katherine Elizabeth Lay Reitmayer, 99, of San Diego, Calif., died June 14, 2005, in San Diego. Born Nov. 1, 1905, in Columbus, she was the daughter of Karl Louis and Katherine Marie Gaddis Lay.
Katherine, named after her mother, was known to all as “Betty.” November 1st is All Saints Day for much of the world and Betty’s character made her birth date seem most appropriate to her family.
None of us can remember an unkind word or selfish act from Betty. She was a beloved mother and grandmother. Her light heart throughout life’s problems were an inspiration to us all.
Betty moved from Columbus to Chicago in the 1930s but her family and Indiana and her hometown were always dear to her. She moved back to Southern Indiana in the late 1980s and then finally to San Diego to be with her daughter and her family.
Betty was a devoted member of the Christian Church and lived a good and full life. She loved to travel, play games, do handwork and, most of all, she loved to laugh.
The funeral will be at 10:30 a.m. Monday at Barkes, Inlow & Weaver Funeral Home on Washington Street with the Rev. Greg Tatum officiating. There will be no calling. Burial will be at Garland Brook Cemetery.

Other survivors include a nephew, Robert Lay Jr., and nieces, Margaret Lay Stambaugh and Ethel Louise Lay Kuehn.
