Velma F. Arthur, 78, of Cleveland Street died at 12:42 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 9, 2006, at Columbus Regional Hospital.

Mrs. Arthur’s life was dedicated to God and her church. She loved to teach and read the Bible every day and was a member and former Sunday school teacher at First Church of the Nazarene. She also was a former volunteer at Sans Souci.

She retired from Cosco on April 30, 1990.

The funeral will be at 10 a.m. Monday at Barkes, Weaver & Glick Funeral Home on Washington Street with the Rev. Damon Spurgeon officiating. Calling will be from 2 to 5 p.m. Sunday and from 9 a.m. until service time Monday. Burial will be at Garland Brook Cemetery.

Memorials may be made to Gideons International or missions at First Church of the Nazarene.

Born in Columbus Jan. 5, 1928, Mrs. Arthur was the daughter of Elijah J. and Grace Shroyer Sparks.

Survivors include sons, Barry (Judith) Arthur of Columbus and Harold O. (Ruth) Arthur II of North Vernon; a daughter, Sara K. “Sally” Reyes of Texas; a brother, Cleo (Norma) Sparks of Columbus; a sister, Zelma Graham of Columbus; grandchildren, Daniel Plumm, Monica, Joseph, Robert, Christopher and Michele Arthur, Juan Jr., Matthew and Patricia Reyes and Scott, Susan and Mark Boroughs; and 24 great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Harold O. Arthur, in 1971; a son, Roger Arthur; and a brother, Herman Sparks.
