Max L. Barkes, 73, of 24th Street, died at 8:11 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 25, 2006, at Columbus Regional Hospital.

Mr. Barkes worked at Cummins Engine Co. for 35 years and retired in 1985 as a foreman. He was an Army veteran and attended East Columbus United Methodist Church. He was a member of the CREAK club and enjoyed fishing, NASCAR and going to auctions.

The funeral will be at 10 a.m. Tuesday at Barkes, Weaver & Glick Funeral Home on Washington Street, with the Rev. Charles Aigner officiating. Calling will be from 4 to 8 p.m. today and from 9 a.m. to time of service Tuesday. Burial will be at Garland Brook Cemetery.

Memorials may be made to East Columbus United Methodist Church or the donor’s choice of charities.

Mr. Barkes was born May 21, 1932, in Columbus, the son of Homer J. and Margaret V. DuBois Barkes. He married Doris A. Adams on May 27, 1955.

Survivors include his wife; daughters, Brenda Ann Barkes of Lafayette and Linda Susan Barkes of Columbus; brothers, Frank Barkes (Edna Hawley) and Larry (Judi) Barkes, all of Columbus; and several nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents; brothers Ervin Williams and Robert Dean Barkes; and a sister, Betty Benefield.
