| | | Don I. Spalding, 71, of Old Nashville Road, died at 6:53 p.m. Saturday, April 1, 2006, at his home after a lengthy illness.
Mr. Spalding retired from Cummins Engine Co. in 2001 where he had worked for 44 years. He was a member of Holy Trinity Catholic Church in Edinburgh and was a former member of Bartholomew County Saddle Club, Driftwood Valley Cloggers. He was a two–time Kentucky state clogging champion and two–time Indiana state clogging champion.
He was an outdoorsman and enjoyed horseback riding, clog dancing and playing the harmonica, which he enjoyed playing at his church.
The funeral Mass will be at 1 p.m. Wednesday at Holy Trinity Catholic Church in Edinburgh, with the Rev. Tom Schliessmann officiating. Calling will be from 4 to 7 p.m. Tuesday at Barkes, Weaver & Glick Funeral Home on Jonathan Moore Pike and from 11:30 a.m. to noon Wednesday at the funeral home. A prayer service will be conducted at 7 p.m. Tuesday at the funeral home. Cremation is planned after the service.
Memorials may be made to the American Cancer Society, Hospice of South Central Indiana or the American Diabetes Association.

Mr. Spalding was born March 31, 1935, at Indianapolis, the son of Paul F. and Helen Drury Spalding. He married Dorothy R. Studler on Sept. 8, 1956.
Survivors include his wife; sons, Timothy M. (Charlotte) Spalding of Columbus, Patrick J. (Darlene) Spalding of Locust Grove, Va. and Brian L. (Denise) Spalding of Columbus; a brother, Ronald (Joyce) Spalding of Brownsburg; sisters, Betty (Ora) Hight of Franklin, Delores Heiney of Greensboro, N.C. and Frances (Stanley) Bishop of Columbus; grandchildren, Sophia Johnson and Nathan, Rebekah, Aaron, Reid, Emily, Mary, Hope and Abel Spalding.
He was preceded in death by his parents.
