| | | Max D. Andress, 84, of Hollyhill Lane died at 8:50 p.m. Tuesday, March 20, 2007, at Hospice of South Central Indiana Inpatient Facility.
Mr. Andress was a graduate of Elkhart High School, attended Michigan State University from 1940 to 1941 and entered Ball State University in September 1942. During World War II, he was a 1st lieutenant in the Army and was stationed in the Philippines and Kobe and Yokahama, Japan.
Beginning in August 1949, he attended Indiana State University where he was a graduate assistant football coach and assistant basketball coach for two years. He graduated from Indiana State with a degree in business education and physical education and a master's degree in secondary school administration.
In 1951, he came to Columbus High School as head football coach and assistant basketball and track coach. He served as football coach for 21 years, including an undefeated season in 1959. He was the first chairman of the Football Coaches Commission for State Play-Offs in football and on July 30, 1976, was inducted into the Indiana Football Hall of Fame. In 2004, the football field at Columbus North High School was named "Max Andress Field."
Mr. Andress was mayor of Columbus from 1971 to 1979 then worked at Cummins Engine Co. as community director.
He was a member of St. Bartholomew Catholic Church.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be conducted at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday at St. Bartholomew Catholic Church with Father Joseph McNally officiating. Calling will be from 3 to 8 p.m. Monday at Barkes, Weaver & Glick Funeral Home on Washington Street followed by recitation of the Rosary at 8 p.m. Entombment will be at Garland Brook Mausoleum with military graveside rites conducted by Bartholomew County Veterans Color Guard.

Born in Elkhart Aug. 27, 1922, Mr. Andress was the son of Ross V. and Edithe L. Hosler Andress. He married Dolores M. Letzkus March 31, 1951, in Terre Haute.
Survivors include his wife; sons, Dave (Holly) Andress of Indianapolis, Tom (Elena) Andress of Columbus, Mike (Daryl) Andress of Indianapolis and Steve (Joy) Andress of Fishers; a daughter, Nancy (Shane) Hankins of Columbus; 21 grandchildren; and one great-grandchild.
He was preceded in death by his parents.
