James D. Church, Sr.
1943 – 2009

James David Church, Sr., 65, Savannah, Missouri died unexpectedly on Friday, April 17, 2009 at his home. James was born November 26, 1943 at St. Joseph, Missouri to Elva (Blakley) and William Thomas Church, Sr. He graduated from Savannah High School in 1962 and then worked at Whitaker Cable. James married Vickie Lynn Stroud on January 8, 1967 at Woodson Chapel Christian Church, St. Joseph, Missouri. He was drafted by the United States Army on March 8, 1967 and served until March 8, 1969. James was a Vietnam Veteran and he received many medals of commendation. He also worked at Artesian Ice. James completed 35 years at Wire Rope Co. on April 16, 2009. He was often called the King Garden Man for the beautiful gardens he grew. Garden Man was his C.B. Handle. James was a loving husband and father. Preceding James in death were his mother, Elva Church; mother-in-law, Mary Louise Stroud; father-in-law, Raymond Eugene Stroud; and aunt, Lavona Vonkeanel. Survivors: wife, Vickie Church, of the home; sons, Terry Church and wife Cyndi; James David Church, Jr; daughter, Ann Church; brother, William T. Church, Jr; all of Savannah; sisters, Karen Taylor and husband John, Amazonia, Missouri; Donna Hamilton, Kansas City, Missouri; Sharon Summers and husband, Danny, Savannah; grandchildren, Sierra, Kelsey and Payton; several nieces and nephews and many friends. Celebration of Life: 1:00 PM Tuesday, April 21, 2009 at Breit-Hawkins & Gladden Funeral Home, Savannah, Missouri. Interment at Savannah, Missouri Cemetery. Public viewing after 12:00 PM Monday. Family will receive friends from 6 to 8 PM Monday. The family suggests memorials to Special Olympics of St. Joseph, Missouri.
