1933 - 2009

Robert Vernon “Bob” Markt, 76, St. Joseph, Missouri passed from this life on Saturday, August 08, 2009 at Heartland Hospital, St. Joseph, after suffering a stroke on July 31, 2009. He was born on April 23, 1933 in Savannah, MO. He owned and operated Markt Truck Lines, Inc. for 55 years. He also owned and operated The Painted Pony Lounge for 20 years. Robert was in the United States Army, serving his country from 1953 to 1955. He was stationed in London, England. After returning from the service he started driving a tractor trailer and built a lifelong successful business that he was still active in until his death. Bob loved fishing and dancing. He was also an active member of The Eagle’s Lodge. Robert married Patsy on May 17, 1983 in Miami, Oklahoma Survivors: his wife of 26 years, Patsy L. (Leach) Markt, of the home; 2 sons, Charles Markt, Topeka, KS; Timothy Markt and companion, Angela Jones, St. Joseph; 3 sisters, Vanna Sue Foulk, Atlanta, GA; Laverna Crowley and Mary Dodson, both of St. Joseph; brother Charles Markt, Amazonia, MO; 4 grandchildren, Mallory, Mitchel, Marley, and Mariah Markt, Topeka, KS; 2 step-sons, Rick Kessler, Grimes, IA; Randy Kessler, Atchison, KS; step-daughter, Jenne Sue Minnelli, IA; 3 step-grandchildren, Nathan, Matt, and Colby Kessler, Grimes, IA; step-granddaughter, Tana McCalanahan; step great-grandson, Daryl Lehman, II, both of St. Joseph; several nieces and nephews; and his two precious dogs, Molly and Maggie. Robert was preceded in death by his mother and father, Vernon and Ethyl (Goodhart) Markt; sisters, Laura Francis Markt, Beverly Markt, Ellen Smith and Margaret Sutton; mother-in-law, Avis Allen, whom he called “Big A!”; first wife and mother of his two sons, Peggy (Herpel) Markt; and second wife, Virginia (Williams) Markt. Celebration of Life: 2:00 PM Wednesday, August 12, 2009 at Gladden-Stamey Chapel. Mr. Markt will be cremated following the service. Inurnment will be held at a later date at Memorial Park Mausoleum. Public viewing after 9:00 AM Tuesday. The family will receive friends 6 to 8 PM Tuesday. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests memorials to the Leukemia Society or the American Cancer Society.
