Liethen, Hazel C.

Hazel age 93,of Appleton died peacefully on Thursday February 26, 2009, at Brewster Village in Appleton after a short illness. Hazel was born in Appleton on April 10, 1915, to the late James and Elizabeth Chadek. After graduating from Appleton High School, Hazel attended Lawrence University. Hazel was united in marriage to Robert Liethen at St. Joseph Catholic Church, and the couple enjoyed many years together until his death in 1988.

Hazel was extremely active in the Appleton community. She worked for over 45 years with the Appleton Red Cross where she was a local officer, and a member of the “Gray Ladies”. Through the Red Cross, Hazel took care of many of our local military families while they were off serving our country. Hazel was very active with the American Cancer Society, the Appleton Women’s Club, the St. Elizabeth Hospital Auxiliary, and various regional investment organizations. She was also a past President of The Ladies Elks at Appleton Lodge #337. While in her 50’s, Hazel earned her license as a Real Estate Broker. She loved Appleton and was proud to live here, and was known to some to be an Appleton historian. Hazel traveled extensively abroad, and enjoyed trips to her cabin on Lake Archibald. She loved to play Bridge and was a member at Butte Des Morts Country Club for many years. Hazel was also a member at St. Joseph Catholic Church for many years.

She is survived by her two sons: Thomas (Karen) Liethen, Newcastle, WA; and Frederic (Dianne) Liethen, Appleton; 2 granddaughters: Kirsten (Lars) Vestergaard, Portland, and Amy (Brian) Severa, Appleton; 3 great grandchildren: Isabel, Matthew, and Adam. She was preceded in death by her parents, and 2 brothers: Ralph and Gordon Chadek. A

Mass of Resurrection will be celebrated 10:30am on Tuesday March 3, 2009 at St. Joseph Catholic Church, 404 W. Lawrence St., Appleton, with Father Larry Abler officiating. Friends may call directly at the church on Tuesday from 9:30am until the time of service. Entombment will take place at Highland Memorial Park.

In lieu of flowers, a memorial fund has been established for the American Red Cross.
