“Cully”
Carleton age 87, died peacefully Friday February 27, 2009, at Appleton Medical Center.
Cully was born October 19, 1921, in Appleton, son of the late Anton and Agnes (Smith) Fredericks. He was a graduate of Appleton High School.
Upon graduation from high school he enlisted in the National Guard. In October of 1940 his unit, Company D 127th infantry of the 32nd Red Arrow Division was called to active duty. After training in the states the 32nd Division was chosen by General Douglas MacArthur to fight in the South Pacific. On Christmas day of 1942 he was wounded in the Buna Campaign in New Guinea. He left his unit and was flown to a hospital in Australia where he was in rehabilitation for three months. He then chose to rejoin his unit on its way to the Island of Leyte in the Philippines. His tour of duty ended in July of 1945.
On February 20, 1946 Cully was united in marriage to Elaine Pirner. He attended and graduated from Green Bay Barber School and barbered for 37 years at Fredericks Barber Shop on west College Av. until he retired in 1983.
Cully was a member of Zion Lutheran Church. He held several offices in the Local Barber’s Union; was member of Appleton American Legion Post #38, DAV and a member and past Commander of Appleton VFW Post #2778. Cully was a “scratch” bowler, good golfer, enjoyed fishing and loved baseball.
Cully is survived by his wife of 63 years, Elaine; two daughters: Nancy (Wally) Kussmann, Appleton; Cheryl (Jim) Minor, Winston-Salem, NC. Cully was a proud grandfather to his two grandsons: Bill (Carol) Kussmann; Ray Kussmann and enjoyed his two great grandchildren: Margaret Elaine (Molly) and Matthew Carleton Kussmann. He is further survived by a sister-in-law: Marion Fredericks, a brother-in-law Milton (Joan) Pirner and a host of nieces, nephews and friends. He was preceded in death by his brother Robert and a sister Eunice Else.
Services will be held 11 a.m., Tuesday, March 3, 2009, at Zion Lutheran Church, 912 N. Oneida St, Appleton, with Rev. Kurt Kovanen officiating. Entombment will take place at Highland Memorial Park. Friends may call directly at the church on Tuesday from 10 am until the time of service. Memorials may be directed to Theda Care at Home Hospice.
