Vander Heyden, Martin

Martin age 92, of Appleton, passed away peacefully in his sleep Friday, April 17, 2009, at Brewster Village. He was born December 9, 1916 in Schaijk, Holland, son of the late Herman and Catherine (Vissers) Vander Heyden. He married Elizabeth DeKlein, January 29, 1940, in Zeeland, Holland, sharing 54 years together before her death on August 27, 1995.

He farmed in Holland until coming to the United States in 1952 with his family. He was employed by Combined Locks Paper Mill for 6 years and then served as Sexton at St. Joseph Cemetery from 1958 until 1979 when he retired. He was a member of St. Joseph Catholic Church. Martin was a warm loving and compassionate husband, father, grandfather, great grandfather and great-great grandfather who always put his family first. He was always there for his children and helped them with their many projects over the years. He was a loving husband and devoted care giver to his wife, Elizabeth. He took great pride and pleasure in his flower garden and he especially enjoyed playing cards with his family and Dutch friends.

After 92 years of a wonderful life, he will be deeply missed by: 2 daughters and sons-in-law: Nancy (Bill) Van Stappen, Appleton; Wilma (Richard) Nelson, Mesa, AZ; 5 sons and daughters-in-law: Herman (Pam) Vander Heyden, Gilbert, AZ; Pete (Mary Lou) Vander Heyden, Mountain; Tony (Patricia) Vander Heyden, Brillion; John (Fay) Vander Heyden, Appleton; Joe (Brenda) Vander Heyden, Appleton; a Son-in-law: Bob Lockin, Appleton; 2 sisters and a brother-in-law: Anna Vander Linden, Holland; Toos (Anton) Rasing, Holland; 19 grandchildren: Christine Zernicke, Diane Rizzo, Dawn Dallman, , Betsy Van Stappen; Bill Van Stappen; Teri Verbeten; Kerri-Lyn Vander Heyden; Stacie Martin; Dan Vander Heyden; Tom Vander Heyden; Jill Shumate; Matthew Nelson; Dustin Vander Heyden; Joshua Vander Heyden; Tammy Jochman; Jesse Vander Heyden; Andrew Vander Heyden; Amy Tedford; Holly Vander Heyden; 20 great grandchildren and 4 great-great grandchildren, and special friend Mary Somers. He was preceded in death by: 2 daughters: Elizabeth Vander Heyden and Catherine Lockin; 2 brothers; Herman and William; and 3 sisters: Rika (Cornelius) Jacobs, Petronella Habraken and (ZR.) Catharina Vander Heyden JMJ.

Mass of the Resurrection will be celebrated at 11 AM, Thursday April 23, 2009, at St. Joseph Catholic Church, 404 W. Lawrence St., with Rev. Larry Abler officiating. Entombment will take place at St. Joseph Cemetery. Friends may call at Brettschneider-Trettin-Lederer Funeral Chapel on Wednesday, April 22, 2009, from 4 PM until 7 PM with a prayer service starting at 6:30 PM. There will also be visitation at the church on Thursday from 10 AM until the time of the service.

The family would like to express a special thank you to the staff and nurses at Brewster Village for the loving care that Martin received during his stay.
