Appleton
Leroy James Sommers, age 81 passed away after a courageous 5-1/2 year battle with cancer on Saturday, September 19.
Leroy was a life-long resident of the Appleton area, having enjoyed a 35-year career in sales with Miller Electric. After retirement, he and his good friend Terry Mulder founded S & M Manufacturing producing snowmobile trailers and caps. Throughout his life he participated in many sports including water and snow skiing, snowmobiling and hunting. He was also an avid motorcycle enthusiast. He also enjoyed restoration of antique automobiles and tractors. Leroy was a member of the Appleton Moose Lodge #367 and also belonged to the Appleton Elk's Lodge #337 for 43 years, serving as Exalted Ruler numerous times. He particularly enjoyed the design and construction of the Elk’ s annual Appleton Flag Day Parade floats.
Leroy is survived by his wife, Betty, Appleton; his children Sheryl (Frank) Hills, Georgia; Tom (Mary) Sommers, Appleton; Jean (Steve) Harmon, Georgia; Rebecca (Burleigh) Arnold, and Sue Sommers, of Los Angeles; four step-children, Mark (Virginia) Rowe, St Paul; Beth Rowe, Jayne Rowe, and Terry Rowe, all of Appleton. He was also blessed with ten grandchildren and one very special great grandson. He is further survived by three sisters, Audrey Lathrop, Appleton; Betty (Dallas) Boelter, Appleton; Ilene (Ron) Nurenburg, Fl; a brother, Darrel (Judy) Sommers, Darboy; and a brother in-law, Tom (Bonnie) Ponders, Green Bay; and many nieces, nephews and numerous friends.
He was preceded in death by his parents Martin and Lorraine, as well as his sister Muriel Ponders, and brother in-law Lyle Lathrop.
A memorial service for Leroy will held 7:00 p.m. Monday September 21, 2009 at Brettschneider-Trettin-Lederer Funeral Chapel, with Rev. Dennis Ellisen officiating. Visitation will be held from 4:00 p.m. Monday until the time of the service. Interment will take place at Ellington Community Cemetery, Stephensville. In lieu of flowers, a memorial fund has been established.
Leroy’s family would like to express their heartfelt thanks to Dr. Goggins and the oncology staff at St. Elizabeth Hospital, Affinity Hospice and the staff of Appleton Health Care. Additionally, special thanks to his brother in-law, Dallas Boelter for his many acts of kindness in Leroy’s final months.
