Just as ceremonies offer value to the living, so does establishing a permanent memorial.   Permanent memorials serve as a focal point for the remembering of a loved one and can help in overcoming grief.  Usually cremated remains are placed in some type of permanent receptacle or memorial urn before being committed to a final resting place.  The urn can be buried in a family plot.  Sometimes the urn is kept in the home.  It can also be placed in a memorial niche at a cemetery.

Cremains may be scattered over land or water where permitted.  However, this choice should be carefully considered.  The act of scattering may have a meaningful or even romantic appeal but the fact that it is an irreversable decision should first be remembered.

The emotional value of establishing a permanent memorial site is worthy of consideration.  Perhaps the planting of a tree or flowers in a significant location would serve as a memorial to your loved one.
