Long time Valley View resident, Charlotte Faye Maurer, age 83, passed away Tuesday, December 9, 2008 after a short stay at The Grange Nursing Home, Mascoutah, IL. She was born Charlotte Faye Buffington and was the daughter of the late Arthur and Elsie Buffington. She was also preceded in death by her grandson Parris Wood. Her childhood home was located at the original Buffington Funeral home in Valley View. Her early years were spent with Ruth Bolton MacRoberts and Kathryn Bowman Reinert, both lifelong friends. She attended Hegins Township High School graduating in 1942. In January 1944 she married Richard Maurer. They spent the next 60 years together at Maurer Orchards just north of town, raising 2 children, Richard Jr. of Newport News, VA., and Pamela Slaughenhaupt of Swansea, IL. As a parent Mrs. Maurer was active in the local PTA, taught Sunday school and was a member of Friedens United Church of Christ in Hegins. She loved animals, was an avid reader, enjoyed gardening and membership of the Pottsville Club. In declining health Richard and Charlotte moved to Illinois in 2006 to be closer to family. Mrs. Maurer is survived by her husband of 64 years, Richard Maurer Sr., her brother Donald Buffington and his wife Joyce, son Richard Jr. and his wife Marsha, daughter Pamela and her husband Barry, and 4 grandchildren, Mauriel, Richard III, Anne, and Ping. Memorial services will be held at a later date. Buffington-Reed Funeral Home, Valley View, is in charge of local arrangements.
