|Elizabeth Mae Schlegel, age 94, of 16 Harlan Lane, Hegins, passed away Wednesday, March 28, 2012 at her residence.
She was born on Sunday, March 24, 1918, in Newark, NJ, a daughter of John Kukla and Fanny Yanmutory Kukla, who were Russian immigrants.
After moving to Pennsylvania the family settled in Forestville. Upon the loss of her father, John, Minersville become the families home. After the death of her mother, Fanny, Elizabeth was adopted by Abraham and Clara Beiler of Friedensburg.
She attended a one room schoolhouse near Friedensburg through 8th grade, and later earned her GED.
She and Harlan Schlegel met while working in the agribusiness, they married and moved to Friedensburg. During World War II Harlan was an educator, farmer, and ALCOA employee, while Elizabeth worked in garment factories in Cressona and Hegins and on the family farms.
Her husband Harlan passed away December 25, 1990.
She was a member of St. Andrew's United Methodist Church, Valley View.
She was preceded in death by four sisters Julia Harper, Vera Kukla, Rose Beerley, and Mary Kukla; an by two brothers Philip Laychock and William Kukla.
She is survived by a son Lanier H Schlegel and his wife Denise of Hegins; three grandchildren Debra Susan Ross and her husband William of Bethlehem, Andrew David Schlegel of Philadelphia, and Rebecca Amelia Schlegel of Frackville; three great grandchildren Melissa Gray Ross and Elizabeth "Libby" Marie Ross both students at Penn State University, and Colleen Cassandra Ross of Bethlehem; and her three cats Frisky, Snowy, and Patches.
Funeral services were held at St. Andrew's United Methodist Church, Valley View on Saturday, March 31, 2012, at 11:00 am, with Rev. Donald Morgan officiating.
Visitation was held from 10:00 am to 11:00 am on Saturday at the church.
Burial was made in St. Andrew's Cemetery, Valley View.
Buffington-Reed Funeral Home, Valley View, was in charge of arrangements.
