Mary Elizabeth Kovener Metz, age 90, of Seymour, passed away at Covered Bridge Health Campus, in Seymour, IN, on Monday, December 10, 2007, at 8:45 a.m. She was born on February 12, 1917, in Crothersville, IN and was the daughter of Clarence F. “C.F.” and Bertha M. Blau Kovener. Mary married Ralph E. Metz, of Uniontown on December 30, 1945, in Crothersville, and he preceded her in death on October 28, 1990.
Mary was a member of the Evangelical-Reformed Church, now the United Church of Christ, from 1929-1956. She was a Junior Choir Leader, Guild Girl Counselor for several years, an Assistant teacher of Ladies Sunday School Class for a year and a Primary Sunday School Teacher. She was a member of the First Baptist Church in Seymour where she served as devotional leader of the Golden Owls, was a member of Tri Mu Sunday School Class, since 1947 and the Edna Martin Missionary Circle. Mary attended Central Normal College in Danville, IN from 1935-1937. She taught the lower level four grades at Bethany School in Vernon Township in 1937 and 1938. In 1938-1946, she taught first grade in Crothersville in Vernon Township. Mary received a Bachelor degree from Indiana University in 1964 and a Master degree in 1971. Mary taught the second grade at Seymour-Redding School for the Seymour Community School System for 16 years, retiring on May 30, 1980. She was a Pet and Hobby Leader for the Jackson County Farm Bureau for several years, a Cub Scout Mother, worked with the Boy Scout Troop of First Baptist Church and was a Brownie Leader for 2 or more years at Seymour-Jackson School. Mary was a member of Delta Kappa Gamma Society of Upsilon Chapter in Jackson Co. since 1966, the Martha Club “81”, Home extension Group until it disbanded in 1994, serving as Devotional Leader several years, was a Member of the Retired Teacher’s Organization since 1980 and a former member of American Association of University Women.
She is survived by two sons: Stanley E. (Karen) Metz, of Uniontown and Ronald L. (Shelby) Metz, of Seymour, and one daughter: Kathy I. (Jeff) Hilton, of Seymour. Seven grandchildren: Greg E. Metz, of Indianapolis, Brian L. (Sherry) Metz, of Brownstown, Todd A. Metz, of Uniontown, Michelle (Mike) Rhoades, of Seymour, Melissa (Gerry) James, of Seymour, Mark E. Metz, of Indianapolis, and Eric C. (Jennifer) Hilton, of Crothersville. Eight great-grandchildren: Brooke R. Metz, Justin L. Metz, Dustin A. Metz, and Lucas C. Hilton., John, David, and Zach Rhoades and Whitney James. One Sister: Clarice K. (John) Nehrt of Crothersville and several nieces and nephews. She was preceded by her husband, her parents and one brother, Carl F. Kovener.
Funeral services will be held at 10:00 a.m. on Wednesday, December 12, 2007, at Burkholder Funeral Chapel, with Rev. Larry Tingle officiating. Visitation will be held on Tuesday, December 11, 2007, from 4:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m. at Burkholder Funeral Chapel and on Wednesday, from 9:00 a.m. until the time of service. Burial will take place at Uniontown Cemetery following the service.
Memorial contributions may be made to the First Baptist Church, Uniontown Cemetery, Covered Bridge Health Campus or the donor’s choice.
