| | | Ruth Harris Layer, longtime Garrettsville resident, died on Thursday, September 10, 2009 after living life to the fullest for 90 years. She received loving care from the Loyalton of Ravenna for the past six years.
Ruth was a 1937 graduate of James A. Garfield High School and attended Miami University for one year in 1939. She was a veteran of World War II, serving in the Women’s Army Auxiliary Corps from 1943 to 1945. She served as a Clerk typist and also in the Motor Transport Division. She received the Women’s Army Corps Good Conduct Medal, Women’s Army Auxiliary Corps (WAAC) Service Medal, American Campaign Medal and WWII Victory Medal.
After returning from military service, she married her childhood sweetheart, Robert ‘Bob’ Layer in August, 1945. Throughout her life, Ruth enjoyed traveling, bird watching, gardening, music, dancing, her home, her five children and many grandchildren.
Ruth is survived by her wonderful family, her children Kathy Layer (Rick Welty) of East Meredith, NY, Brad Layer (Terri), of Waynesboro, GA, Judy Layer Florian (Michael) of Grosse Pointe, MI, and Richard ‘Rick’ Layer (Lesley) of Garrettsville. She is also survived by her two sisters, Margaret Barb (Jordan) and Anna Jane Raresheid (George). She also leaves grandchildren Amy Jackman (Jason), Kellie Prall (Adair), Tami Smith (John), Beau, Rob, Kaitlyn, Julia and Austin Sierra Layer; great grandchildren Nicholas, Eric and Matthew Jackman, Peyton Layer, Joshua Smith and Jane Prall, several nieces and nephews and many friends. Her husband, Bob, son, Jon, brother Lysle Harris and sister Lina DeYoung preceded her in death.
The family will receive friends from 10:00 a.m. to 11:00 a.m. on Monday, September 14, 2009 at the Garrettsville United Methodist Church. A memorial service will follow.
In lieu of flowers, the family would appreciate donations to the Alzheimer’s Association, 225 N. Michigan Avenue, Floor 17, Chicago, IL 60601-7633.
