Carl Anthony Englert, 82, was born November 13, 1926 in Fullerton,
Pennsylvania, to parents John G. and Barbara J. (Klingler) Englert. He
relocated with his family to Barberton, Ohio in 1940, and served at
the rank of sergeant in the US Army from 1945 – 1946. Carl graduated
from Xavier University, Cincinnati, and pursued his career as an
educator in Barberton before joining the Brothers of the Holy Cross.
As a brother, he served as a teacher and administrator until he
returned to the life of a layperson in the early 1970’s. He also
earned his Masters degree in education from Notre Dame University
during this time period. In 1972, Carl began work at John Carroll
University as an administrator, where he would remain until his
retirement in 1996. In 1973 Carl married Carol Zalar, and they
eventually relocated to Burton, Ohio where they would raise three
children. His family would remain his chief priority for the rest of
his life. Carl held a lifelong dedication to education. He was also a
proud patron of the arts, including visual arts and the Cleveland
Orchestra. He was a passionate fan of Notre Dame football, and in his
later years also enjoyed walking, reading, gardening, and working on
his house.
He is survived by his wife of 35 years, Carol (nee Zalar); son David
(Maria) of Burton; daughter Rebecca of Burton; son Martin (Dalia) of
Cleveland Heights; sister Bernadine Walsh of Florida; and his beloved
granddaughters Julia and Holly. Carl was preceded in death by his
parents, and his brothers Martin and Francis.
Funeral services will be held on Thursday, October 1, 2009 at 9 A.M.
