Rev. Dr. Wilton Biron Sharpe, age 83, went home to be with his Lord and Savior, Saturday July 19, 2008 after a long illness.
He was born to Rev. and Mrs. Oscar Sharpe, December 15, 1924. He was married to Hope Nicholson Sharpe, July 23, 1944. In addition to his wife survivors include four daughters, Joyanne (Gary in heaven) Griffith, Kathleen (Ed) Opel, Melody (David) Johnson, Laurel (Steve) Brodie, and one son Rev. Wilton F. (Deborah) Sharpe; twelve grandchildren, Dianna (Jeffrey) Elder, Christopher and Benjamin Coir, Ezra Thomas, Jonathan, Jeremey, and Aaron Sharpe, Lee, Evan and Ketley Johnson, Justin and Julian Brodie; nine great grandchildren, Brianna and Danielle Elder, Dylan and Nichole Coir, Morgan and Grant Sharpe, Addison, Delilah and Lucy Thomas. Dr. Sharpe and Hope ministered for many years in several Free Methodist Churches. They loved their people much and were greatly loved in return. Dr. Sharpe and hope worked together as a team, working, loving, caring and praying for the people they served. Dr. Sharpe entered the ministry after sensing a definite call of God to his work at the age of 33. Beside his pastoral duties he attended college to further prepare himself for the ministry. He received his Bachelor’s Degree from Felix Adler University and his Master’s and Doctor’s degrees from the International Bible Institute and Seminary, Orlando, Florida. He did graduate work at Onondaga College and Syracuse University. In 1967 he was ordained and Elder by Bishop Myron Boyd of the Free Methodist Church. In 1977 Dr. Sharpe was appointed to the Holiday Free Methodist Church. During his ministry there he went thru three building programs, construction of a new church in 1977 due to a steady growth in membership and attendance and an addition added to the sanctuary in 1982. In 1985 a new educational and fellowship building was completed. Because of the excellent leadership during these building projects, the membership voted unanimously to name the new building, “The Wilton B. Sharpe Hall”.
Dr. Sharpe entered the U.S. Navy in 1942. He attended the Navy School of Pharmacy. He also played in the U.S.O Band. His rank was that of Third Class Petty Officer. He served aboard the Destroyer U.S.S. Taussig, number 746 in August 1944. He was awarded the following medals: the Silver Star, the American Campaign Medal, The Asiatic and Pacific Campaign Medal with Five Bronze Stars, the Philippine Liberation Medal with One Bronze Star, World War II Victory Medal and the Good Conduct Medal. He was discharged in November 1945.
Dr. Sharpe was a member of the following organizations: Veterans of Foreign Wars, Disabled American Veterans, West Pasco Ministerial Association, Christian Motorcycle Association, served as chaplain for the Florida Sailors Association. For nine years played with the Hernando Symphony, one of the greatest joys after he had retired. He played his trombone during his years in the ministry for services and events. He was an accomplished soloist, not only singing at the churches he served, and also for many special occasions.
Funeral services will be conducted on Saturday at 11:00 a.m. from the Free Methodist Church 1200 County Highway 122, Gloversville. Services will be conducted by his son the Rev. Wilton F. Sharpe.
