| Gladys E. Barter, age 91, formerly of Johnstown, passed away on Monday February 9, 2009 at Chesapeake General Hospital, Chesapeake, VA, after a long illness.
She was born March 27, 1917 in the Town of Mohawk, a daughter to the late Edward Gardner and Vietta Johnson Gardner. Gladys attended the Mayfield Methodist Church, and was also a member of the Mayfield Senior Citizens. She was employed at the former Johnstown Knitting Co. until her retirement. On May 2, 1958 she was united in marriage to John Barter and he passed on June 10, 1970. Survivors include one daughter Patricia A. Nellis of Caroga Lake; one son Robert E. Barter of Chesapeake, VA.; thirteen grandchildren; numerous great grandchildren; several nieces, nephews and cousins. In addition to her husband she was predeceased by a daughter Joan E. Wanderlick. Funeral services will be conducted on Saturday at 12 noon at the A.G. Cole Funeral Home Inc. 215 East Main Street, Rev. Dr. R.W. Williams will preside. Friends and family may call on Saturday from 10 to noon at the funeral home. Interment will be in Fern Dale Cemetery, Johnstown in the spring.
