| | | Mildred Ethel Bruce, age 93, a resident of Gloversville, Passed away on Monday April 20, 2009 with her loving family at her side, and by the grace of her creator she was reunited with her loving husband Claude John Bruce whom she married September 18, 1935 and celebrated 35 years of love and devotion until his passing in 1988.
She was born May 19, 1915 in Johnstown one of ten children of the late James Sweeney and Almira Van Lone Sweeney.
Mildred’s Culinary Skills were legendary, best demonstrated and exemplified during her twenty-five years of service as head cook with the Gloversville Enlarged School System. Mildred considered the students and faculty her extended family and treated each child her own. Mildred ensured that no one went hungry from “Millies kitchen”. Mildred catered weddings, anniversaries, reunions and special occasions for the friends in the community she loved.
Mildred was a member of the North main Street United Methodist Church, and also enjoyed her time with the local Home Bureau, creating breathtaking projects further demonstrating her craft, skills and talents in knitting, quilting and baking.
Mildred’s most enduring quality was her gentle smiling demeanor and unequaled sense of humor. She instantly befriended everyone she encountered and was a center of warmth, joy and admiration.
Blessed with four children; 8 grandchildren and 18 great-grandchildren, Mildred’s life passion was the creation of wonderful memories as she shared her time , love wisdom, serving as an inspiration to them and their friends alike.
Survivors include three children Garth (Gary) Bruce and his wife Linda, Sandra Van Slyke and her husband Charles, Bonnie Jaros and her husband Philip; eight grandchildren
Lee Bruce, Erica Bruce, Michael (Tara) Bruce, Nadeen (John) Rizzo, Dana (Matthew) Wakefield, Stacie (Michael) DiMezza, Deborah (Steven) McGillis and Denise Hatch; 18 Great Grandchildren; one sister Gertrude (Leon) House; one brother Leland (Eleanor) Sweeney; numerous nieces, nephews and cousins.
In addition to her husband she was predeceased by a son Milton Bruce, sisters Dorothy Post, Lena Stergas, Leona Nethaway; brothers Kenneth Sweeney, Willard Sweeney, and LeRoy Sweeney.
Funeral services will be conducted on Thursday at 10;00 a.m. from the A.G. Cole Funeral Home inc. 215 East main Street, Johnstown. Pastor Chris Hamm will preside.
Friends and family may call on Wednesday from 2 to 4 and 7 to p.m. at the funeral home.
Interment will follow in Evergreen Cemetery, Fonda.
Memorial contributions in lieu of flowers may be made in her memory to American Diabetes association, Breast Caner Foundation or to the Meco Volunteer Fire Department.
