Mr. Melvin W. Kretser, age 82, of State Highway 10, Fort Plain, New York, died early morning May 4, 2009 at his home with his family by his side. Born on September 16, 1926 in the Town of Palatine, New York he was the son of the late Frank Kretser and Lottie Nealy Leavenworth Kretser. He attended Fort Plain Central School and was a lifelong area resident. He served in the United States Army in 1945. Southern Philippines Ground Combat, he received Asiatic Pacific Campaign Medal and Bronze Star, Good Conduct Medal, and Philippines Liberation Ribbon with Bronze Star, and a World War II Victory Medal. Melvin was employed for 45 years with Beech Nut Foods. He enjoyed traveling the United States. Mr. Kretser is predeceased by a brother Arnold S. Kretser, sister Irene Evera and grandson Lonnie M. Duesler.
He is survived by his wife of 45 years Florence Kretser of Fort Plain, New York; sons Ronald Kretser of Fort Plain, New York, Timothy Kretser of Canajoharie, New York; daughter Linda Praetorius of Fort Plain, New York, Sandra Duesler of Fort Plain, New York; Stepsons, Daniel Warner of Canajoharie, New York and Gary Warner of Fort Plain, New York; brothers William J. Kretser of Fort Plain, New York, Roger C. Kretser of Fort Plain, New York, Deward Kretser of Kinnewick, Washington, Ralph E. Kretser of Tor, Alaska, Gary Kretser of St. Johnsville, New York; sisters Beverly J. Cotton of Fort Plain, New York, and Geraldine Nellis of St. Johnsville, New York. He is also survived by eight grandchildren, as well as several step grandchildren; several nieces, nephews and cousins.
Graveside services with Military Honors for family and friends will be conducted on May 16, 2009 at 2:00 p.m. at the Ephratah Rural Cemetery. In lieu of flowers please consider a donation in memory of Melvin Kretser to Mountain Valley Hospice, 108 Steele Ave., Gloversville, New York 12078.
