Marjorie E. Ortell, age 97, a resident of Johnstown, passed away peacefully in her sleep on Saturday, July 18, 2009, at the Wells Nursing Home, Inc. Johnstown, With her beloved daughter at her side. She had been in failing health since breaking her hip in a fall in June at the Hillcrest spring adult home. She was born on Friday April 13, 1912 in the Town of Minden, a daughter of the late Walter Francisco and Clara Beyer Francisco one of eleven children.
Marjorie was a member of the Johnstown Reformed Church, and the Fonda Senior Citizens. Molly worked along side her husband in the ice business they operated in Broadalbin. Molly was also very talented with a needle working as an invisible mender at the former Broadalbin Knitting Mill and the Gloversville Knitting Mill. She loved the challenge of supervising a mending department and teaching many, many, ladies this art for over 50 years .When she retired at age 68 she continued garment sewing from home. She always said she was born with a needle in her hand. On March 21, 1931 she was united in marriage to Harold Ortell and he passed away on December 27, 1970. Survivors include one son Peter Ortell and his wife Frances of Powhatan, Virginia; one daughter Frances Steenburgh of Johnstown; one brother Arnold Francisco of Lakeland Florida; six grandchildren Jeffrey Steenburgh of Lassellsville, Kelly Steenburgh of Johnstown, Shayla Ortell of Winchester, Virginia, Erica Hibbard and her husband Brad of Portsmouth, Rhode Island, Peter ortell Jr. and his wife Dana of Albany, Georgia, and Dennis Moreno of Fonda; Four great grandchildren; two step great grandchildren; two great-great grandchildren; many nieces, nephews.
Funeral services will be conducted on Monday at 3:00 p.m. from the A.G. Cole Funeral Home Inc. 215 East Main Street, Johnstown. The Rev. Brian Dykema will preside.
Friends and family may call on Monday prior to the service from 1 to 3 p.m. at the funeral home.
Interment will be in Evergreen Cemetery, Fonda.
