| | | Marilyn M. Lavigne, a long-time resident of Johnstown, passed away on Friday, July 31, 2009. She was 71 years old. She was born on June 16, 1938, in Saratoga Springs, N.Y., the daughter of the late Donald and Elizabeth Maher. She graduated from Saratoga High School and the State University of New York at Plattsburgh, where she received her degree in early childhood education. She taught kindergarten in the Schenectady School District before devoting her time to the raising of her five children and the care of countless other children, family members, and loved ones whom she met along her path.
Marilyn was a past regent and an active member of the Johnstown Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution and served as a senior leader of the Nancy Staring Society and New York State Society of the Children of the American Revolution. She was active in the community, volunteering at the Johnstown Information Booth and giving tours of the local area and historic buildings. She was a member of the Holy Trinity Parish and its Rosary Society. She may be best known for her many contributions to local establishments and events in the form of her famous cookies.
She was predeceased by her husband, Paul James Lavigne, and her son, William Thomas Lavigne. Survivors include her four children, Bruce (Mary) Lavigne of Westford, Mass.; Michael (Alicia) Lavigne of Lake Forest, Calif., Patricia Lavigne of Johnstown, and Susan (Jerome) Mullin of Chevy Chase, Md.; three grandchildren, Christopher Lavigne of Johnstown and Derek and Jacquelyn Lavigne of Westford, Mass.; as well as many nieces, nephews, cousins and extended family members.
Calling hours will be Monday, August 3, 2009, from 5 to 8 p.m. at the A.G. Cole Funeral Home, 215 East Main Street in Johnstown. A Mass of Christian Burial will be conducted Tuesday, August 4, 2009, at 11 a.m. at St. Patrick’s Church on Glebe Street in Johnstown. Memorial contributions may be made to the Johnstown Senior Center.
