| | | Sotera “Teddy” Sarris, age 95, formerly of Johnstown passed into the next life on the morning of August 13, 2009, at the Gwynedd Square Center, Landsdale, Pa. Teddy was born in Little Falls, New York on February 7, 1914. Her father, Theodore Nicholas was a candy maker who came to this country from Greece several years before she was born. Her mother, Annetta Jeffries, also from Greece, bore seven children and died a month or two before her 100th birthday.
As everyone knows, “all Greeks own restaurants!” Teddy’s family was no exception. She worked in diners and restaurants for her father, her brother, her uncles and her husband. She made the world’s best popcorn. Her pies, chocolate chip cookies, and baklava were specialties everyone looked forward to eating, even though she cheated sometimes on the butter in the baklava and used margarine instead.
She was united in marriage to William George Sarris on June 15, 1941. “Willy” was killed in an automobile accident on February 9, 1991.
Survivors include two sons George Sarris and his wife Suzan of Trumbull, CT, and Brian Sarris and his wife Stephanie of Landsdale, PA: Grandchildren William, Jane, Jordan, Mary and Julie. Sisters pearl Gifford, and Elayne Dageenakis, and brother Peter Nicholas, along with several nieces, nephews. Sisters Dena Serras, Georgia Vagianellis, Sophie Russo and her “other’ brother Jim Malina who was taken in by Theodore and Annetta as a young child have passed away.
