| | | Donald C. McCoy, age 82, of Johnstown passed away on Sunday, September 13, 2009, at Albany Medical Center, with his family at his side after a brief illness. He was born on August 27, 1927 in Sayre, Pa. a son of the late Charles McCoy and Catherine Loman McCoy. Don moved to Gloversville in 1930and he attended St. Mary’s School he then moved to Johnstown and Graduated from Johnstown High School in 1945. After high School he enlisted in the U. S. Navy on December 27, 1945 he served as a yeoman third until his honorable discharge on November 5, 1947. After service Don worked at the former Pyne Bros., Ellithorpe Leather and the Johnstown Post Office until he was forced to retire do to the onset of illness in 1972. Don was very active in the community working on the Memorial Day Parade, and for many years serving as the Grand Marshall. He was also the commander of the American legion Post 472, and also served as past commander and secretary treasurer of the post. One of Don’s special awards was being named Mr. Johnstown in 1986, Supreme Court Judge Carrol S. Walsh Jr. and Johnstown Mayor Harvey Mansfield were present along with many others including Don’s family. Mr. McCoy was also very active in establishing the World War II memorial in 2002 and also the Disabled Veterans. He had great respect for the American Flag and what it stood for, every year he and other vets would place flags on the graves of the fallen veterans who served our Country. Lastly Don was a true Scout. He started as Scout Master of troop 112and held that position for many years until the onset of illness in 1972 that forced him to retire. In 1975 he returned to scouting and became assistant scout leader and has remained there until the time of his death. He enjoyed working with the boys and helping them to get their badges, his biggest joy was seeing many young men become Eagle Scouts. He also helped at summer camp, selling popcorn, bottle drives, and food drives. In his nearly 51 years of scouting he has received many awards they include the Silver beaver Award, the St. George Award, the Pelican Emblem given by Bishop Broderick one of the highest catholic awards to receive as a Scout Master, Order of the Arrow, Golden Boro award, and in 1979, the Order of the Vigil the highest scouting award in the order of the Arrow. Don also was a 4th degree member of the Knight’s of Columbus, a member of the Concordia Club, former member of the Johnstown Loyal Order of Moose. He was also active at the Johnstown Senior Citizens, and as a volunteer at the Wells Nursing Home. Don McCoy you will be well missed by your community and family. Survivors include his wife Virginia B. Sohl McCoy whom he married on June 13, 1953; three sons Gary McCoy and his wife Christine of Mayfield, Todd McCoy and his wife Debbie of Palmetto, Florida, and Scott McCoy and his wife Lisa of Johnstown; ten grandchildren; three great grandchildren; nieces, nephews and cousins.
In addition to his parents Don was predeceased by a twin brother Ronald McCoy.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Thursday September 17, 2009 at 11:00 a.m. at St. Patrick’s Church, corner of Glebe and East Clinton Street, Johnstown. The Rev. James Fitzmaurice will be the celebrant.
Friends and family may call on Wednesday from 4 to 8 p.m. at the Barter & Donnan Funeral Home, 1 North Melcher Street, Johnstown.
Interment will be in Mt. Carmel Cemetery, Johnstown, with Military Honors.
