| | | Mason City- Robert Warren Dirksen 85, of 931 14th S.E. died Tuesday September 1, 2009, at Mercy Medical Center North Iowa, Mason City
A funeral service will be held at 10:30 a.m. Saturday, September 5, 2009, at Hogan Bremer Moore Colonial Chapel, 126 3rd Street N.E. Mason City, with Reverend Sid Bohls officiating. Burial will be in Elmwood St. Joseph Cemetery, Mason City with full military honors conducted by members of the Mason City Veterans Memorial Association.
Visitation will be held on Friday from 5 p.m. until 7 p.m. at Hogan Bremer Moore Colonial Chapel, 126 3rd Street N.E. Mason City; and continue one hour prior to the service.
Memorials may be directed to the Robert W. Dirksen memorial.
Robert was born June 3, 1924 in Hampton, the son of Ole and Eva (Newton) Dirksen. He attended school in Mason City. Robert enlisted into the United States Army serving during WWII in the Philippines; he was later honorably discharged. Returning from the war he worked for the Mason City School System as a ground foreman.
Robert was united in marriage to Theodora “Babe” Pappas on September 30, 1949; to this union two children were born. He retired from the Mason City School System after 42 years of service. After retirement he enjoyed spending time with his grandchildren, fishing, hunting, and woodworking. Robert was a member of the V.F.W. and the St. Paul’s Lutheran Church, Mason City.
Robert is survived by his children, Linda (David) Nolte, Mason City and Kathy (William) O’Dell, Alaska; grandchildren, Brian (Diann) Nolte, Stacy (Garry) Cunningham, Bill (Shana) O’Dell, Dan (Lisa) O’Dell, Tracie (Ryan) Behr, Fred (Stacey) O’Dell; 13 Great Grandchildren; one brother Walt (Lorraine) Dirksen, Plymouth; along with several nieces and nephews, other relatives and friends.
Robert is preceded in death by his parents Ole and Eva Dirksen, wife Theodora “Babe” Dirksen, sisters Shirley and Katie and one brother Floyd.
