Dateline: Clear Lake, IA John R. Angle, 80, 1506 Willow Pl., Clear Lake, IA
died Monday, October 12, 2009 at Muse-Norris Hospice Inpatient Unit, Clear Lake, IA.
A Celebration of Life service will be held Friday, Oct. 16, 10:30 AM at the First Congregational Church, 205 W. 10th Ave N., Clear Lake, with Rev. Michael Nash officiating. Interment will be at 3:00 PM at the Linwood Park Cemetery, Boone, IA. Visitation will be held Thursday, Oct. 15, from 4:00 – 7:00 PM at Ward-Van Slyke Colonial Chapel. Military Honors will be provided by the Clear Lake V.F.W. A Masonic Service will be at 7:00 PM. Memorials maybe given to Hospice of North Iowa.
John was born August 20, 1929 in Huron, SD, the son of Walter Lee and Una Mae (DeWitt) Angle. They moved to Ames, IA when John was a young child. John graduated from Ames High School in 1948, participating in football, earning all-conference honors, and serving as co-captain of the track team in his senior year. John married Marilyn L. Byerly Dec. 24, 1950 in Boone, IA. While attending the University of Iowa, he enlisted in the U.S. Air Force and served during the Korean War. After hid discharge as Staff Sergeant in 1954, he returned to the University of Iowa and graduated in 1956. 1956. John taught physical education one year in Webster City, 1956-57. He taught math and also coached Jr. High football and basketball in Vinton, IA from 1957-65. John moved to Clear Lake, teaching Jr. High Math from 1965 – 91 when he retired. He also coached Jr. High football, boy’s basketball, wrestling and girls track. John married Jane S. Crabb March 27, 1970 at the Little Brown Church in Nashua.
John was an avid Hawkeye fan, enjoyed camping, traveling, biking, golfing, walking, snow skiing and water-skiing. He and Jane made many capming trips to the western states, enjoying the national parks, especially Yellowstone where they "worked" for 2 summers. He loved playing with his kids and grandkids and supporting and attending their activities. John loved coffee with his buddies at the Backyard Deli. John and Jane spent winters in Arizona where they had many “snowbird” friends. He was a member of the First Congregational Church, Clear Lake, IA, Clear Lake V.F.W. and the Masonic Benevolent Lodge, Mason City, IA.
John is survived by his wife Jane S. Angle, Clear Lake, IA; four children John P. Angle and his wife Dorene, Boone, IA, Allan L. Angle and his wife Julie, Clear Lake, IA, Marilyn C. (Cam) Kline, Clear Lake, IA and Lynette D. Angle-Smith and her husband Lee, Naperville, IL; eight grandchildren John (Mandy) Angle, Travis (Theresa) Angle, Shelley Angle, Jeremiah (Sarah) Angle, Elisabeth Angle, Nicholas Angle, Tyler Kline and Casey Smith; six great grandchildren Jordan, Jayden, Bryce, Kayla, Josiah and Tyler; and brother Elmer L. Angle and his wife Ruth, Ottumwa, IA.
John was preceded in death by his parents, wife Marilyn, brother Byron 'Pat" Leroy Conyers and sister Margarette Whetstone and many nieces and nephews.
