| | | Gilbert L. Smith age 81 passed away Wed. June 25, 2009 at the Gibson General Hospital in Princeton. He was born October 5, 1927 in West Allis, WI to George and Ellen (Leeds) Smith of Milwaukee WI. He spent 24 years in the U.S. Air Force. Following his retirement he worked 17 years for Verizon Telephone Co.
Gilbert was a graduate of Wabash Valley College in Mt. Carmel with two associate degrees. He was a member of Our Saviour Lutheran Church in Princeton for 40 years and had served on the Church Council several times. He was a life member of the V.F.W. Post 1147, an avid bowler at Gibson Lanes and enjoyed golfing at the Princeton Country Club.
He is survived by his wife Royce Ann (Hodge) Smith of Princeton; five children and their spouses, Bruce A. Smith, Milwaukee WI., David & Veronica Smith, Fairborn OH, Tim & Shelly Smith, Mt. Carmel, IL, Tamara Smith, Evansville and Jennifer & Michael Campbell, Princeton; grandchildren, Laura and Rusty Lloyd, Adam Smith and Alexis Smith, Mt. Carmel, Jarrod and Joshua Smith, Fairborn, OH, Zachery Campbell, Sara Campbell and Ethan Campbell, Princeton, KaLynn Smith, Evansville; 4 great grandchildren in Mt. Carmel; sister Gloria(Bob) Love, Springs Hill, FL; brother, Leonard Smith, Arcadia, CO; and several nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents; brothers, Richard and Kenneth Smith; and sisters, Thelma Grenrich, Doris Canaan, Carol Busalacchi and Lorraine Smith.
Funeral services will be held 2:30 p.m. Tuesday at the Colvin Funeral Home with the Rev. Karen McNeil-Utecht officiating. Burial will follow in Columbia "White" Church Cemetery in Princeton. Visititation will be from 4 until 8 p.m. Monday at the funeral home. Mt. Carmel V.F.W. Post # 4276 will conduct military graveside services.
Memorial Contributions may be made to the Our Saviour Lutheran Church. Envelopes will be available at the funeral home.
