CHARLES E. WOODLEY ESSEX JUNCTION — Charles “Charlie“ Elmer Woodley, age 92, died peacefully and with dignity on May 13, 2008, in Green Mountain Nursing Home. He was born on May 14, 1915, in Geneva, N.Y., to Elsie Entz Woodley and Cleon D. Woodley. He was predeceased by his parents and his sister, Helen, and brother, George. He graduated from Alfred University in Alfred, N.Y., in 1940, and served in the Army Air Force from May 1941 to September 1945. While stationed in Montgomery, Ala., he met his future bride, Mildred Beasley. They were married in Shiloh Baptist Church in Pike County on April 21, 1945. In July of 1946, he began working for the John Deere Company in Syracuse, N.Y., as a territory manager. During that time, he and Mildred lived in New York, Pennsylvania, Massachusetts and Vermont. He retired 35 years later, in 1981. During retirement, he and Mildred volunteered as tour guides for 17 years at Shelburne Farms and 12 years at the Ethan Allen Homestead. He wore the first Ethan Allen reproduction costume during his tours with pride. He was a member of the Burlington First Baptist Church for 43 years and served on the Board of Trustees and the Diaconate Board. He was also a member of the Sons of the American Revolution, the Masons, Scottish Rite, Chittenden County Historical Society, a charter member of the Wilderness Camping Club, and a lifelong member of the Blooming Grove Historical Society. Charlie is survived by his loving wife of 63 years and caregiver, Mildred; his son, the Rev. Harry E. Woodley and wife Stephanie (Adams) of Laconia, N.H.; John D. Woodley and wife J udy Stewart of Essex; granddaughters, Sophia Woodley and Anna Woodley; stepgranddaught er Frances Orbacz and many cousins and family friends. Charlie enjoyed woodworking during his retirement years. He also enjoyed a good story and always had one to share with the many friends who visited him over the years. He will be missed by all who loved him. A memorial service will be held at the Essex Juntion Funeral Home of Corbin and Palmer, Pleasant Street, on Wednesday, May 28, at 11 a.m., followed by a reception at the home of John and Judy. Burial will be at the Vermont Veterans Memorial Cemetery in Randolph Center on June 9th at 1pm. Memorial donations may be made in his memory to Shelburne Farms, 1611 Harbor Road, Shelburne, VT 05482.
