BURLINGTON - Thelma A. Sharrow, 91, of Burlington, Vt., passed away peacefully on Thursday, September 18, 2008, at Birchwood Terrace Healthcare surrounded by people who loved her.
She was born in Lincoln, Vt., on July 21, 1917, the daughter of Victor and Maude (Liberty) Duclos. Thelma was raised one of six children in the town of Lincoln where her father was the village blacksmith. She met and married her husband Vern Sharrow in Burlington in 1939. Together they raised their family in Shelburne Village. During this time she worked at Grandway and Sears. Their home was always open to family and friends where they enjoyed many happy times.
She later moved to Country Park in South Burlington, where she lived for 20 years. She was an active volunteer and especially enjoyed her work with the Fresh Air Foundation. She loved to travel, play cards, dance and did beautiful handwork. Some of her happiest memories were her trips to Europe to visit her family. Her lively spirit and sense of humor will always be remembered. She was a very caring mother, grandmother and friend. Thelma enjoyed a long and happy life and will be greatly missed.
She is survived by her sons, Harvey Sharrow and wife, Elaine of Charlotte, and John Sharrow and his wife, Sally of Milton; by her daughters, Victoria DeGraaf and husband, Charles of Colchester, and Linda Smith and husband, Bill of Greenville, S.C.; her grandchildren, Bill DeGraaf and wife, Wendy, Lesley DeGraaf Bennett and husband Stuart, Patrick Sharrow, Vern Sharrow, John Charles Sharrow and his wife Sheila, Christina Smith and Michael Smith. Thelma also leaves her sister, Beatrice Booth of Waterford, Conn.; her brothers, Norbert Duclos and his wife, Norma of Middlebury, and Ronan Duclos and his wife, Rosalie of Shelburne; and several nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her parents, husband, and brothers Paris "Bill" Duclos and Stanton "Sam" Duclos.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Monday, September 22, 2008, at 1 p.m. at St. Catherine of Siena Catholic Church on the Green in Shelburne. Visitation will be held on Sunday, Sept. 21, 2008, from 4 to 6 p.m. in the Shelburne Chapel of Corbin and Palmer Funeral Home, 209 Falls Road, Shelburne.
The family wishes to extend a heartfelt thank you to the staff at Birchwood Terrace Healthcare in Burlington. With the loss of her eyesight her days were dark and long. In addition to her care they gave her the gifts of their love and friendship and in return enjoyed her quick wit and sense of humor.
Those planning an expression of sympathy are asked to consider a donation to the Birchwood Healthcare Activities Program, 43 Starr Farm Road, Burlington, VT 05408.
