Dirk & Theresa "Terry" DeJong, Owners/Funeral Directors
Dirk DeJong is the son of G. William and Dorothy DeJong, who bought the Pearson Funeral Home in 1944 and established DeJong's Funeral Home. He was raised in the funeral home building and helped with the work at the funeral home in many ways. Together, we have been associated with the funeral business since our marriage in 1972. As newlyweds, we moved to Dallas, Texas, where Dirk attended Dallas Institute of Mortuary Science. We then moved back to Iowa where Dirk served his internship and training at Westover Funeral Home in Des Moines. In 1974 we moved to Keokuk to join the family business.
We have raised four daughters in Keokuk. Kate, her husband, Kevin Scruggs, and son, William, live in Tulsa, Oklahoma, where she works for the Alzheimers Association of Oklahoma and Arkansas, Kevin works for Flowers Bakeries, and Will is in kindergarten. Sarah is a pediatric oncology & hemotology nurse and works in the Pediatric Specialties Clinic at University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics in Iowa City. Her fiance, Joshua Koza, teaches art at Solon High School. Beth and her husband, Jeffrey Fuchsen, and daughter, Chelsea, live in Urbandale, Iowa. She is an intensive care nurse at Iowa Methodist Hospital in Des Moines, Jeff is a manager for ChildServe in Johnston, Iowa, and Chelsea is two years old. Laura and her husband, Myron McVeigh, live in Keokuk. She works independently and Myron works for Peter's Heating & Air Conditioning.
Our funeral home is a family owned and operated business. We are large enough to give our families the same service as the largest funeral homes around, yet we are small enough that each family gets the level of attention and care they deserve. We are dedicated to the importance of family and community and feel we can serve both through the work we do. Our lives are dedicated to this service.
