Robert M. Ewing, 86, of Keokuk, died at 6:40 PM, Friday, July 10, 2009 at Keokuk Area Hospital.
He was born on January, 22, 1923, in Rutledge, Missouri, the son of John T. and Carrie Tull Ewing.
He married Mildred Piersee on July 20, 1947 at the 12th Street Methodist Church in Keokuk. She survives.
He was in the U. S. Army during World War II, spending three years overseas, mostly in the South Pacific with the 854th Engineer Aviation Battalion. He retired in 1988 from Keokuk Steel Casting after an employment of thirty-five years.
He belonged to American Legion Post #41 of Keokuk, was a fifty year member of Keokuk Lodge #29 A. F. & A. M. , and was a member of the Southside Boat Club and Trinity United Methodist Church.
He is survived by his wife, Mildred; two sons, Craig Ewing and his wife, Joyce and Stuart Ewing of Keokuk; one daughter, Diane Carlson and her husband, Tom, of Keokuk; five grandchildren, Tim Ewing and his wife, Stephanie, of Oak Harbor, Washington, Amie Waldemer of Mesa, Arizona , Chad Ewing of Colchester, Illinois, Jason Ewing and Brett Carlson of Keokuk, Iowa and Douglas Ewing of Costa Mesa, California; one step grandson, Christopher Summers, of Keokuk; one brother, Don Ewing of Florida; sister-in-law, Leta Ewing of Rutledge, Missouri; and many nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by a son, Douglas A. Ewing; four sisters, Arlene Anderson, Beverly Cohen, Madeline Hicks and Merline Witt; and a brother, Kenneth Ewing.
Funeral services were Tuesday, July 14, 2009 at DeJong’s Funeral Home with Dr. Emmanuel Dass officiating.
Burial with Military Rites will followed at Keokuk National Cemetery.
