Mary Inez Holmes, 90, of Keokuk, died at 10:25 AM Saturday, August 22, 2009, at Keokuk Area Hospital.
Mary Inez was born July 27, 1919, in Keokuk, the daughter of Harry W. and Inez Billings MacDonald. She married Mervin L. Holmes on December 31, 1936, in Keokuk. He preceded her in death on March 5, 1989. She was a lifelong resident of Keokuk and had been employed for 28 years at the Keokuk J. C. Penney store in customer service. She and Mervin were members of the Swing Easy Square Dance Club and following the Armory explosion she and Mervin ran the Swing Easy Benefit Foundation by distributing the funds for the victim’s children’s education.
She is survived by a son, Floyd Holmes of Chula Vista, California; seven grandchildren, Susan Rex of Overland Park, Kansas, Kathleen Miller of Stilwell, Kansas, Tim Holmes of Newburg, Iowa, Jodi Hopkins of Mitchellville, Iowa, Scott Holmes of Des Moines, Iowa, Kimberly James of Chula Vista, California, and Sampagurta Tafoya of Sacramento, California; eight great grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in dearth by her parents; her husband; a son, Mervin L. Holmes, Jr.; two brothers; and a sister.
Funeral services were Wednesday, August 26, 2009 at DeJong’s Funeral Home in Keokuk. Burial followed at Sunset Memorial Park.
Memorials may be made to the City of Christmas.
