Betty L. Winkle, 76, of Keokuk, Iowa, died Monday, September 14, 2009 at 1:08 p.m. at her home.
Betty was born April 18, 1933, in Keokuk, Iowa, the daughter of Grant and Rosie Mae Hardin Washburn. She was married to Marion Nelson and the later married James Winkle on October 18, 1991, in Rogers, Arkansas. He preceded her in death on March 14, 2008. She was a resident of Keokuk most of her life. She loved her family. She enjoyed painting statuary. She loved her faithful companions, Butch, her dog; Maxwell, her cat; and her two parakeets.
She is survived by two daughters, Margaret Hudson of Keokuk and Tina Huston of Keokuk; four sons, Joseph Nelson and his wife, Kim, of Kingsport, Tennessee, Terry Nelson and his wife, Tamara, of Keokuk, Ricky Nelson of Keokuk and William Winkle and his wife, Stacy, of Quincy, Illinois; nineteen grandchildren including James Nelson whom Betty and Jim raised, and his wife, C.J., of Bentonville, Arkansas; thirteen great grandchildren; a sister, Marjorie Chewning and her husband, Charles, of Keokuk; and several nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her parents; two husbands; one son, Kevin Hodges; one daughter, Connie Sue Nelson; two brothers; and her aunt, Margaret Washburn, who raised her.
Memorial services were Saturday, September 19, 2009, at DeJong's Funeral Home with Rev. John Morton officiating.
