Glenn Ernest Monroe | | VIEW/SEND CONDOLENCES
| | | Glenn Ernest Monroe, 90, of North Vernon died at 2:30 a.m. Tuesday, May 13, 2008, at his home.
Mr. Monroe worked for the B & O Railroad for 26 years, retiring as a brakeman in 1982. As a young man, he was employed as an iron worker for the Tennessee Valley Authority. He served with the Merchant Marines in World War II. He was a handyman and enjoyed tinkering, fishing, gardening and his grandchildren.
Cremation is planned, and there will be a memorial service in Toledo, Ohio. Arrangements were made by Dove-Sharp & Rudicel Funeral Home in North Vernon.
Memorials may be made through the funeral home to Disabled American Veterans.
Born July 25, 1917, in Asheville, North Carolina, Mr. Monroe was the son of Glenworth Charles and Anna Mahanney Monroe. He married Kathryn Cox on February 9, 1955, in Angola.
Surviving with his wife are three sons, Gregory Eugene of Pawtucket, Connecticut, Dennis Irwin of Burgeon, Ohio, and Kenneth Edward of Oregon, Ohio; two daughters, Patricia Eileen of Toledo and Sheree Elaine of North Vernon; two brothers, Donald Monroe of Oregon, Ohio, and William Monroe of Rising Sun, Ohio; two sisters, Grace Kirian and Eleanor Henzler of Toledo; 30 grandchildren; 31 great-grandchildren; and two great-great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents; and a brother, Walter Monroe.
